DJ Sumirock: "She's got this energy that goes beyond age"

DJ Sumirock is a monthly fixture at DecabarZ, a club in Shinjuku, Tokyo. She always usually starts her sets with the theme to the 1960s Japanese anime series Astro Boy, then transitions to techno, rock, jazz, French chanson and classical music. She's been DJing for about a decade, which generally isn't too notable, except she started in her 70s, and she's now 82. Before this, she was running her family gyoza restaurant, where she has worked since she was 19, but when her husband died, she wanted to try something new.

Sumiko Iwamuro, DJ Sumirock, said she fell in love with music because of her father, who was a jazz drummer. During World War II, she would listen to jazz records, muffling the gramophone with a cushion so others didn't know that she was listening to music from enemy Allied cultures.

You can follow her on Twitter and check her on Facebook

Once on the dance floor, she stole the hearts of club-goers.

"She's got this energy that goes beyond age, and that can equal any young person's here," said 25-year-old clubber Fuminari Fujii.

She's stolen my heart, too. What a woman!

I can only hope I have her fire @ 82, I can only hope I have her heart, her spirit. I *loved* it when she's spinning that thrash rock, totally into it.

Sumiko Iwamuro, you totally rock!

That was "Burning Flag" by Marilyn Manson, followed by "Voodoo People" by 2 Cellos. I was looking for examples of her tastes in jazz, chanson and classical music, but no luck via English searches.
