Frank Moore [NYT], the originator of the red ribbon, died of AIDS last week. His gorgeous paintings depicted politics from Yosemite to Versace. As one of the few incredibly contemporary but still publicly accessible artists, he will be missed.

A frequent motif was an elegant spiraling strand of DNA, as in "Beacon" (2001), which shows the artist on a hospital bed adrift in the ocean, looking toward a distant lighthouse emitting a white beam laced with the DNA spiral. What a lovely image.

Indeed he will be missed. Frank was true to his vision and stuck by it, producing an amazing body of work. I especially like the wintry paintings from several years ago. Godspeed, Frank.
