Almir was wonderful, but that Folha article was pretty low effort. Flabbergasted Vibes (the blog) has written previously about the expansion of the american instrument into samba (and vice versa) and worth a read.

Scruss: more likely a cavaquinho. Both descend from small Portuguese guitar forms.
