I'm flying across the Pacific in a few hours to see my mom in PDX. I will not be a dick, although I've done so in the past.

This. This piece is really well-written, very heartfelt, and quite irksome. Call you fucking mother. How is it you are not seeing the connection between how you feel about your child and how your mother feels about you?

Yes. Please. Call your mother. Mother of two here. Was a single parent (with no child support) for years and years. Barely made ends meet, but my children had everything they needed and sometimes things they wanted that I had to save and sacrifice for. My children have their own children now and are fantastic parents. But yesterday...maybe only because my now husband texted them and asked them to please text/call and say happy mother's day...did I hear from either. I don't need gifts or cards. I don't even need them to come by the house (I live 20 minutes away). Just a phone call or a text that says I remember that you are my mother. And it wouldn't hurt to occasionally get a phone call just because... So please. Call your mother.
