Cutting-edge structures in a small Chinese village illustrate the beauty and strength of bamboo, just as China is moving away from this sustainable material.

What gorgeous architecture! I love how bamboo can be used to make things with graceful curves and arcs and also to make things with clean straight lines.

So pretty! That it's sustainable is the green cherry on the top. Shame it's usually too soft for flooring.

Crazy how different civilization would be without grasses. No wheat, oats, eye, corn, hops, or bamboo.

I bet this changes as China modernizes; focusing on local materials fits in nicely with their nationalist tendencies and cultural pride. It's building with Chinese characteristics!

God those are beautiful. This looks a lot like the structures here as well. I'm jealous there's not more education and usage of this wonderful, ecofriendly material here in the US.

I love the bridge. Bamboo looks like the last word in sustainable materials - it grows so quickly it's hard to keep under control.

Lots of illustrations look like renders - I wonder how much of this is actually there. It is a great project, though. And bamboo can grow everywhere (almost), so just start growing!

I was wondering the same thing. To my uneducated eye, it looked like a mix of photos and renderings, but I wasn't sure.

Some drone footage from the site.

Not sure when it was filmed; looking at various web and facebook pages in various stages of bitrot, the first biennale appears to have been held at some point between late 2013 and last year, if it's been held at all.

Ok, Heringer's site says it opened in September 2016, and that the hostels she designed were completed shortly before that. Here's her project page.
