2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Hay Festival of Literature & Arts and the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 95 Theses. To celebrate, the Festival commissioned "30 international thinkers to write 30 new reformations of institutions and authorities, challenging assumptions and imagining the world." The BBC has posted video of Stephen Fry's reformation on technology and society: The Way Ahead. (Transcript) posted by zarq (4 comments total) 19 users marked this as a favorite

There are multiple versions of the video on the BBC's website, and not all of them can be viewed outside the UK. The link in the post did play for me here in the U.S., but am not sure if everyone who clicks will be able to watch. I apologize in advance if it doesn't work for you. Good luck!

Fry's lecture felt reminiscent of Douglas Adams, and it was nice to see him mentioned. (I cannot believe it's been 16 years since he passed away.) Fry touched on a subject he's spoken of (and written about) before: Adams' ideas about the necessity of computer literacy, using a 1930's Wonder Book of Science as an example.

A thousand times this:
"The state of the broadband infrastructure in rural areas is shambolic and contemptuous"

Douglas Adams would have been funny. Fry's talk is a two sentences of content. The rest is padding. Pandora's Box (Jar) is an uninspired theme for remarks like this to begin with, but Fry recites the whole myth in unnecessary and unilluminating detail. He also gives us a non-fascinating history of his life on computers and the internet. (We get it, you were an early adopter.) Fry can be brilliant (read his autobiography, "Moab is My Washpot"), but this is his emptily verbose side at its worst.

The older Fry (and I) get, the less I vibe with him.

I wonder what's up with that.
