Just some animal stuff

I have just resolved to always have either zero or [at least two] pets, so that they can cuddle each other, if they want to.

Relevant to cuddling animals, my brother sent this picture of his dogs this weekend.

Pets Who've Loved The Same Toy Since Forever

My mom's late cat Jake (also a rescue) was pretty indifferent to cat toys. Roll a ball and he would track its movement and maybe swat at it if it rolled close to him, but chasing it would be... I dunno, vulgar or something. Give him a cloth mouse stuffed with catnip and he would sniff it twice and walk away. But he did have a tiny turquoise bunny which he would fish out if the basket of toys and carry everywhere. When he lay down, he would curl his front paws protectively around the TTB and croon a series of mournful meows over it before eventually going to sleep.

Wear and tear on the TTB was thus considerable. My mom would stitch it up and repair it over and over again as the passing years reduced it to little more than a scrap of faded teal fabric. Finally it was no more. Jake was not bereft or anything but he did occasionally paw through the basket of toys then walk away empty-handed (well, empty-mouthed). Maybe a year or two on, my mom spotted in a pet shop another tiny turquoise bunny. She bought it on the off chance that Jake might like it – who can really predict what combination of odour and texture and taste a cat might like? – but as soon as she got it home and put it on the floor for Jake's inspection, he picked it up and wandered away to sit and serenade the new TTB.

Okay, the pets growing old with their toys made me cry and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

ricochet biscuit - that's so interesting that he did that. So he wasn't going by smell but he was going by sight? Or maybe the fabric smelled similar?

Those aren't stuffed animals of themselves! They're just stuffed animals that look like them. Animal gotta have merch.

There's a Flaming Lips track called "The Big Ol' Bug is the New Baby Now" that tells a story about favored toy status and the changing of the guard.

I needed this so much today it nearly made me cry. Thanks! Also is that a really big teddy bear or a really small horse?

I'll leave this here. And this. Also, this, 4 years after that.

One of the few things I don't like about vallhunds is that they're super destructive to stuffed toys.

Except for Nina's humpin' starfish, which comes complete with a shocked expression. Tuffy toys in general last a while and I guess it helps that Nina only sort of vaguely chews on it when she's not humping it at the other dogs. The best part is that she gives it a few humps, one assumes finishes to her satisfaction, and then brusquely flings it away with her paws like she's just "Done. Go 'way."

Penelope has Beige Lump. Beige Lump is a cat-shaped toy about the size of an extra large chicken egg. No one's quite sure where it came from (my son and I think Beige Lump came with Penelope from the place we adopted her, my husband thinks we bought it shortly afterwards), but you give her Beige Lump and she is the happiest kitty on the face of the planet.

A week or two ago my husband threw away Beige Lump because he was tired of finding it in Penelope's water dish (since it's cloth, it would soak up all the water). Fortunately that day he read about how cats see their water dishes as "safe" places to put their toys and he felt incredibly guilty, fished it out of the garbage, washed it thoroughly, and gave it back to her.

I can only speculate that it was made from the same material in the same process and thus had some combination of odours that captivated him. Jake is a decade gone now, but whenever I see a small turquoise bunny in a cartoon or something, I hear Jake's plaintive miaows as he sang it the song of his people.

One of my favorite wedding presents is a custom-made mini version of our dog - Original Moe has always been a bit nonplussed about it, though. So no snuggles, but we did take it with us on our honeymoon - the best part was when other people asked to take pictures with it.
