James Cameron would like to have a word with you about that thread title.

This is cool.

This is pretty amazing. I've used some after-market etched brass parts to enhance a plastic kit before and those things can be very, very difficult to work with. I can imagine the scale and size of these parts make it even more difficult.

I really love this kind of attention to detail. The research involved, the painting, the website... everything about it is just great.

Yeah, well, still...

From the Benchwork section:
DOG BONE, RIGHT AHEAD!!
Despite the attention given to protecting the model, a near-catastrophe ocurred early in the build just after the Forecastle Deck was completed. The model bench in the basement of our home is located against the side of the open stairwell to the first floor. One evening a heavy dog bone bounced down the stairs, fell over the edge and dropped two feet onto the model while I was working on it. The drydock absorbed most of the impact, but the edge of the Forecastle deck was stove in and the shock caused most of the delicate fittings to fly in every direction. Almost all were recovered. It could have been worse. After that day, the stairwell opening above the back of the bench was covered with a heavy screen.

Yeah, duh, that's 1:1. I'd like to see those 1000 hands working in 1:350 scale : )

Probably my favourite quote is from the Fine Details section:
"The binnacle in the center of the platform above is only 3mm tall and is made of 11 separate parts. It's an exact scale replica of the real one."

My mind could not be more boggled.

Thirteen
and
one half
years.

Yikes. A great build, very nicely documented.

Will we never learn our lesson about model-building hubris?

I was astounded to learn the tiny size of it. Everything is so perfect, I was expecting it to be about 5 or 6 feet long.

If you like antique model ships, check out the basement of the Art Gallery of Ontario. There's a bunch from different eras.

I was also surprised at the scale. My memories of my clumsy hands assembling 1:72 aircraft when I was a kid told me that this model should be at least 10 meters long.

Yeah, duh, that's 1:1.

An annotation: Cameron's Titanic set was actually a 90% scale reproduction. (Why not go the final 10%, I have wondered.) I'll have to agree that his was the most amazing Titanic model to date, but Art's is likely the most amazing Titanic model to date that still exists. Cameron sold the remains of his set for scrap.

I'm fascinated by people like Art. I don't have this obsessive streak, and I wouldn't have his patience if I were to live five lifetimes. That he toiled away at this model for 13.5 years -- for the sheer joy of it -- speaks to something wonderful in the human spirit. And as beautiful as the photos of the model are, I enjoyed his On the Personal Side page the most. This is where he tells us about his patience, his willingness to try and to test and to quietly persevere.

Thank you for posting this, Laotic.
