Americans Seem to Like Vigilantes

"Junior, get back in here and put on your pants!"
"I can't ma, the Baldknobbers done stole them!"
--oft quoted animatronic line from the Fire In The Hole ride

Silver Dollar City also has a ride called The Flooded Mine, where trapped animatronic prisoners sing a catchy tune while attempting to escape, like It's A Small Workd set in a labor camp.

Silver Dollar City is a weird place.

In 2017, the people who elected Donald Trump into office say they have done so because of his promises to purge the government of corruption, to tear down the Washington establishment, to reinforce borders, to improve the economic standing of the white working class, and to crack down on crime and perceived terrorism threats. After his election, there was an uptick in hate crimes against minorities, with some of the perpetrators claiming allegiance to Trump. Meanwhile, his inauguration has also stirred up a nationwide protest movement calling itself The Resistance. While the overwhelming majority of the protestors are peaceful, a small splinter of leftist anarchists are engaging in “black bloc” tactics such as wearing black bandanas as masks, smashing business windows, setting small, controlled fires at protests, and sometimes even punching a white nationalist in the face. In this moment, our country’s history of revolution and extralegal violence is more relevant than ever.
That's fairly deep for a site that I'd assumed was concerned with antiques.

Even though these Bald Knobbers saw themselves as righteous men of God, they wanted to startle their enemies appearing like devilish “horrid, hideous creatures.” -- TFA

Silver Dollar City also has a ride called The Flooded Mine... It's A Small World set in a labor camp.

With guns now, apparently. As a kid I thought the flooded mine was scarier than FitH; the prisoners are being worked until they die, trapped in the shitty mine. There's a living mine canary early on, then a dead one later. Morbid with a building sense of dread and like.. some of those dudes are going to die. I remember feeling a strong sense of dread as a kid. The music was catchy too.

It's interesting to read about the true history of the Bald Knobbers. Sounds like a libertarian paradise.

I've been on that ride! I don't remember any Bald Knobbers - I can remember that I wasn't sitting right, or the safety bar was set wrong, and I felt rather uncomfortable.

The future Mrs BinaryApe and I walked past a little rollercoaster for kids and thought it was cute. The operator encouraged us to have a ride (we were the only passengers) and then, I strongly suspect, set the controls to max. Never, ever make someone think you are laughing at their little rollercoaster and then ride it.

That's fairly deep for a site that I'd assumed was concerned with antiques.

Collectors Weekly is really into history, especially obscure or hidden history. They have a lot of articles about minority communities, discrimination, revolution, political and religious movements, sparked by the objects and ephemera that survived.

I really doubt the native Americans "wanted to leave" the area. Strange that an article about the roots of american vigilantes fails to mention settler violence.

That s not what we learned about how native people were treated in Georgia, at least.

Silver Dollar City was a yearly vacation stop during my childhood-- Fire In the Hole was (and still is) one of my favorite roller coaster rides. There's just something about a man yelling "Fire in the hole!" and getting doused with a bucket of water.
