Google to Power AOL Search. America Online and Google today announced a multi-year agreement that will make Google's popular search technology and targeted paid listings available on America Online brands. Google's paid listings will begin rolling out on the AOL service and AOL.COM immediately; they will launch on Netscape and CompuServe in the next several weeks.

Great. Now at least AOL users will get a higher hit percentage on "Trailer+Homes". Can't say I didn't expect to see this type of thing happening though. Google is, to me, the best there is and AOL is smart to get them in their stable.

I guess DMOZ wasn't working out so well.

dmoz isn't a search engine. Anyway, google uses dmoz for its directory, so if anything, the synergy will increase.

This isn't consorting with the Devil? Is this more or less consorting that MS's connection to Apple?

yeah DMOZ is going fine, considering it's all volunteer.

Tip: akin to Googlebombing [but more legit], you can sign up to be an editor of a category, add relevant stuff to that category and watch it attain higher rankings in Google Searches as a result. I'm not saying go be unethical, but if you're tired of not being able to turn up anything good on Google in your category of choice, going to DMOZ and being an editor, is a way to recify that.

Just to also note that it's exceedingly unlikely that any new user will get selected in the weblogs category. It's just too big and scary. I've been editing a fairly successful cat (150 entries) for a year or so now and they said it was a little too big. But really people, do it for the love, not the rankings.
