Thousands of London residents were disturbed yesterday when giant bipeds disrupted their traditional mating ceremonies, attacked them, and went on to assault each other with enormous yellow balls projected at deadly velocities.

Another roundup of Flying Ant Day at Wimbledon with more tweets and a different kind of tennis distraction.

It's the insects' world. We're lucky they let us hang around. At the rate things are going, they may just change their collective mind about us.

It's been a relatively low-key Flying Ant Day up here in my part of the Midlands, for which I am profoundly grateful.

A fun mental exercise, if you have a spare five minutes, is working out which other creatures you'd like to operate along the same lines as ants. If you knew you could go 364 days without ever encountering a large spider, would that be an acceptable trade-off for a day of being harrassed by giant flying spiders trying to fuck each other while flinging themselves up your nose?

What about pigeons? You can go for most of the year without them shitting on everything, but for one day in the summer the country suddenly resembles a Hitchcock film.

I'm still trying to work out what the perfect creature to ant-ify is. Suggestions welcome.

Do you want flying ants?

Because that's how you get flying ants!

the latin mouse: Crocodiles? Or is that too easy?

If it's got to be something that's all over the place already: coyotes.

the latin mouse: hover flies. I'd trade one day of walking around in beekeeper gear for 364 without those damn things incessantly buzzing around.

Mosquitos. No contest.

(I'm too terrified of wasps to put up with a single day of Elevated Wasp Activity. And we mostly manage to avoid each other as it is.)

Vacuum cleaners.

On the Internet, sometimes they know you're a cat.

Ugh, I was in the forest this year for flying ant night. They're attracted to light, so they swarmed the solar powered LED lamp I use in camp. Then, some ants realized that I, being white, reflected the LED and was basically another light source. And then they swarmed me and it was terrible.

Ikr? Flying Ant Day sounds like one of those gross-out children's books that some adults write to look cool to little kids, while the kids are just laughing behind their backs.
