The Shoey

The world of Formula 1 has learned a new expression. It is called "the Shoey". Initiated by Daniel "Honey Badger" Ricciardo, the Shoey has plenty of unsuspecting victims. Including someone rather famous.

I also made the "Make it shoe" joke in advance.

Well, at least we know who's capable of pouring piss out of a boot.

Well. There's something I won't be doing this weekend. Or next weekend. Or, god willing, ever.

But "Schuey" is already a thing! It's the nickname for Michael Schumacher! My parents are massive F1 fans and the entire family (and fandom) has been calling him Schuey for ages! What is this shoe drinking business.

champagne is the most overrated of alcoholic beverages and this is what it deserves

Were the shoes new?

This post is a little late to the party, perhaps? Ricciardo thinks it's getting a touch tired. If he gets on the top step of the podium again this year (unlikely as that is) and somebody proffers a shoe, I'm sure he'll oblige.

But "Schuey" is already a thing! It's the nickname for Michael Schumacher

Schumi (pronounced "shoe me") works equally well for Schumacher and avoids the possibility of confusion.

And shoey’s have been a thing even longer than Schumacher! Ricciardo (incidentally my favorite F1 driver) only brought it to F1. An Aussie MotoGP driver did it after his first victory a few years back and Daniel apparently thought it was marvelous.

Edit: Schumi (pronounced "shoe me") works equally well for Schumacher and avoids the possibility of confusion.

Also this. I don’t think I’ve ever heard F1 fans refer to Schumacher as anything but Schumi.

Were the shoes new?

I imagine they’re brand new for every race but....he had just worn them for about 1.5 hours in a cramped cockpit, sweating profusely the entire time so I’m not sure that counts. It’s sort of hilarious to watch the guys with white jumpsuits climb out of their cars at the end of the race. The butt is like looking at a piece of paper that had bacon rubbed on it.

All these years I've believed that that 80s student party where I got pissed enough to drink VB with Cheezels floating in it out of a sweaty gumboot and then pass out in a shopping trolley was a terrible terrible mistake! Now it seems I've been a THOUGHT LEADER all along.

Is... is that not how everyone drives?

This is a thing in some sections (i.e. younger) whitewater kayaking crowd; if you swim, you have to nail a beer out of a river shoe. Bootie beers are next level nasty, as your drinking vessel isn't some fancy new-every-race shoe, but a one or two season old river trainer.

I don't understand gross-out humor and never will. If someone is an idiot and decides to to this on their own, that is one thing, but pressuring someone else to do it with the "threat" of them looking like a "bad sport" is bullying pure and simple.

Ricciardo thinks it's getting a touch tired.

Yeah the first link is actually about that. I just wanted to post Patrick Stewart doing it, to be honest. The rest is filler.

incidentally my favorite F1 driver

Not to threadsit and post too much in a row, but just in case

pressuring someone else to do it with the "threat" of them looking like a "bad sport" is bullying pure and simple.

I agree with this and this is also why Ricciardo is probably retiring the joke and other drivers often don't go along with it and why he thinks it's been overblown too. But Patrick Stewart specifically asked for the shoey, as you can see from the video.

I drank some champagne from your shoe, la-la-la
I was drunk by the time I got through, la-la-la
For I didn't know when I raised that cup
It had taken two bottles to fill the thing up

"...I feel like there's some real sick bastards around here. I never thought it would continue like this."

This is a useful turn of phrase for many occasions.
