Is it a rabbit? Is it a spider?

Metagryne bicolumnata, aka the Bunny Harvestman. Probably don't click this if you're a bit wobbly about spiders.

Opiliones are arachnids but they are not spiders.

Well, that's just silly.

I assumed the name meant the spider was, you know, HARVESTING bunnies. There's birdeater spiders, so why not bunnyeaters? Anyway I had steeled myself for something a lot more horrible than this Kilroy-was-here-lookin' thing.

NOPE

Why do people always come into bunny-themed threads with this negative "NOPE" business?

Opiliones are arachnids but they are not spiders.

Even so, I assume they're on our side in the war against the insects.

Reader, I squee'd. And nthing the Totoro evocation, which was responsible for the sudden, high-pitched second stage of my squee.

(This is also the second "Gah-LOVE!" reaction I've had to a pic over the past 24 hours.)

Oh, it is so cute! I want to scratch it between its ... protuberances.

The plain old eastern harvestmen creeping around when I was growing up didn't have bunny ears. They were round and brown. We called 'em "daddy longlegs". Both of my parents had a plethora of skin moles, and my child's brain thought a daddy longlegs looked like a mole with legs.

If that isn't a creepy enough idea, every once in a while you'd see 'em mob up together, hundreds of them. Apparently that's called aggregation. Don't google "harvestman aggregation" (or "opiliones aggregation") if seeing that kind of thing bugs you.

Don't google "harvestman aggregation yt " (or "opiliones aggregation") if seeing that kind of thing bugs you.
And by "that kind of thing" I presume you mean "some jerk repeatedly poking a bunch of harvestmen who are simply minding their own (mysterious, aggregational) business.."

The mimic octopuses from the earlier post are better at doing ants than at doing bunnies.

yea, I get a strong Miyazaki vibe off of this - like you see the bunny part peeking up through some bushes and it looks all cute but then you get closer and it stands up shredding the plant and dripping, all whiplike legs and breathtaking animation.

Okay, unlike the spider from yesterday that scared me, (is it arachnid week?) this one is very cute. Kind of like a little marshmallow peep on toothpicks.

In actuality, I have a phobia of rabbits and a deep love of spiders, so I had this NOPE reaction for this reason.
