"Pet brothers from other mothers..."

UK-based image library Warren Photographic may specialize in pet photography, however, what they truly stand out for is finding animal brothers from other mothers! Cats and bunnies, guinea pigs and also dogs – they all seem related in their adorable image gallery.

“It was my mum that came up with the inspiration for matching animals when a friend suggested she try it with her matching seal-point Birman kitten and dwarf bunny. I have continued her great work” – Mark Taylor explained to Bored Panda.

After months - years - of lurking, I have finally joined in order to say how great this is. I'm having a scary medical procedure tomorrow and I really need something good today. Thank you, cooker girl!

At first I got huffy about #11 because they're both rodents, but then I read some wikipedia and found that guinea pigs and squirrels are about as close as dogs and cats or whales and even-toed ungulates, so now I feel comfortable saying "these are all great!"

I laughed audibly. Adorable!

I showed this to my 12 yo and she emitted a squeal so high-pitched it unsettled the dog.

Post title lies - I scrolled through dozens of cute animal pictures and none of them were connected by the spine.

No one said conjoined identical cousins, robocop. I mean, really. That post is for tomorrow.

I admire the photographer's patience. After attempting yearly Christmas photo shoots with two young kids and two dogs... which caused so much stress I used to dread the event days in advance.

Number 12's kitten is looking with some alarm at the rabbit and its rabbit-ly multiplying self.

So, anybody know whether these fur patterns are an example of convergent evolution, or whether they're controlled by a set of genes shared among all mammals (since rabbits are in a different order than dogs & cats).

Beyond simple color shades, the siamese pattern (darker fur in the ears, nose, feet & tail) can be seen in cats & rabbits, but not dogs. Likewise, I've seen rabbits with coloration I associate with German Shepherds (black back with red or tan fronts). Calico - a mixture of red, black and white - occurs in all three.

All of these are domesticated versions of wild mammals. Domesticated mammals tend to have some similar features: large spots of fur color, floppy ears, curly tails, 'tame' disposition, slightly lower intelligence than wild type, and some other psychological features. The taming process may be a matter of selecting animals with a mild neural crestopathy.

I got curious one day and the tortishell guinea pigs are not like tortishell cats. They're genetically 3 colors in spots, not like cats where the colors are on and off.

Seal point rabbits are basically the same as seal point cats (albino with color in the cool parts) only their genetics are a little weird. Well, maybe a lot weird. Rabbit genetics are tricky.

Cats make most other animals look like work in progress -- but not deer; deer can hold their own against anything.
