I was really scared of Gef when I was a kid. I don't know why; it's the most obvious hoax ever. But it was in more than one of the many unexplained-mysteries books I read, and I remember sleeping with the lights on one night after reading it.

There's a Lemon Demon song about Gef because of course there is. It's called "The Eighth Wonder."

I remember reading about this in one of the many many Usborne publishing paranormal books my gradeschool library had, that were like terrible forbidden fruit to me. I'd read them, and not sleep for a week...and then check them out again.
