I think the best way to understand what a DJ is actually doing is to watch the waveforms like you can see at the bottom right of the "4X World DMC Champion" video. Or (sort of) the "Pioneer Israel" vid.

(I love seeing this -- watching live DJs , it's hard to see all of the work they're putting in, as opposed to a rock band w drums, guitars etc.)
