Eight small things worth your time

The New York Times has a lovely feature looking at 8 short things, very closely. A 90 second scene from Freaks and Geeks that "takes you from melancholy to sheer delight." A pizza being made. An Eddie Murphy joke. An amazing adaptation of the Swan in dance. The erection of a building on the High Line. The 2-second bleat of Law and Order. A lyric from Lil Uzi Vert. A shoe painted by Manet.

That was a great breakdown of one of my favorite Freaks and Geeks scenes.

Yeah, the Freaks and Geeks scene is sublime.

The ice-cream sketch is one of the high points of 20th century comedy. I'll fight anyone on this. It is simultaneously so funny and so real. There are like five different perspectives bouncing around it, with wildly different tones, and all funny.

"all that shit stopped when Mr. Softy came to town"
"Look how fast I can make these little motherfuckers run."
"AND BRING ME BACK MY CHANGE"
"wanna lick? psych!!!"

Freaks and Geeks was one of my favorite shows. Ever since I saw the new Ghostbusters movie I have been unable to reconcile the fact that Paul Feig was so closely associated with both. It physically hurts to think about.

Lil Uzi Vert's vocal performance on that song is utterly astonishing. The way his voice rides the beat and the subtle changes to his timbre throughout are really something to behold. I'll fight anyone with bad things to say about "mumble rap." (although I will readily admit to not fully understanding the buzz around Lil Pump)
