Baltimore City quietly removed four Confederate statues last night....and the celebratory photos are heartwarming.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is good news but we're having an active "confederate statues" discussion in the Charlottesville thread. If you want to make a specific post about removal of confederate statues that would be good but needs to be a bigger wider post. -- jessamyn

I had seen the Taney statue from a distance many times before but never looked at the plaque. I would've been shocked. The Dred Scott decision came down in 1857. NYT says the Taney statue went up in 1887--22 years after the Civil War ended and 10 years after Reconstruction ended.

Anybody think that statue was maybe a political statement about something? Anybody? Bueller?

These statues aren't "history", they're a concerted decades-long effort by racists to romanticize and normalize a struggle that nearly ripped this country apart. These memorials should be for the victims of this terrible era and the historic figures responsible should be in museums and history courses so that we never forget.

Good. Smart move, hope other cities follow suit.

dances with sneeches has already figured out the perfect fate for the statues. Let's get started!
