Shiver me timbers... Derek P becomes a Pyrate. That "Meet the Beatles" cover will soon need to be replaced with one from Sly and the Family Web. Or Treasure Island. But good luck, and a very happy birthday for tomorrow... and if anyone even mentions the word beginning with C and rhyming with "babble", terminate with extreme prejudice.

Definitely check out the press release they put out, wherein Derek quotes Krusty to good effect.

Am I the only one that still doesn't get what Pyra (the company, the app I think I understand) actually does?

I was in the dark, endquote, until I read this.

Endquote, this is where you say nice things about Pyra and Derek. THIS is where you can read all about Pyra and blogger and get most of your questions answered.

Thanks, everyone! I never thought I'd be so excited to have a fulltime job again, but I am. Stay tuned for great things. :-)

what's the second suprise gonna be?
I can't wait

The second surprise? Well, let's just say that there were *four* secrets at Fatima, and the Pope ain't talkin'. (Congrats, Derek!)

I predict something really, really interesting :).

But seriously, based on Derek's expertise and various web projects I'm fairly intrigued. Up to this point Pyra has been pretty tool-centric, but in today's press release they described themselves as a creative laboratory as well. I don't know exactly what that means, but it sounds pretty exciting.

Is it just me, or do the best go to work for Pyra? I mean take a look at Derek. M. Powazek & Jack Saturn, the two recent additions, now all they need is Jason Kottke & the K10K baldies to complete what I would consider a dream team, not that the current line up isn't already a dream team.Good show you guys, you sure do know who to hire!

well, jason posted something when arianna moved to austin that sounded like he was kind of restless...then, he DID hang with pyra while in san francisco for the webby awards...

i'm going to go out on a limb and say that the next announcement has something to do with him...if derek is the creative director, doesn't he need someone to direct?

if i'm wrong i'm wrong...

Pyra = Borg?

They seem to assimilate a lot of people into their collective :-)

Hope you guys have a good time :-)

Yeah, but I'm still wondering what "cabble" is. Sounds like a marvelous snack food. Cabble! Now With Olestra!

Besides, the Cabal disbanded years ago.

I don't even know the guy and knew today was his 27th birthday. I'm surprised to not see so many well-wishers posting that too.

Ev and Meg are going to hate me, but I'm going to spill the beans about Pyra's next announcement. I am in talks with Pyra to sell them kottke.org in a multi-million dollar deal. I've been trying to sell it for months now. Glassdog Heavy Industries made a bid of just over $6.50 ($6.54 plus a slightly eaten Twinkie, to be exact), but Pyra came though with a bid well into the 2 figures ($14.97, plus my choice of discontinued McDonald's Happy Meal toy). I'm feeling good about how the negotiations are going and a deal should be announced within the week. I'm so happy....

Hey congrats to you too, Kottke dude!
posted by EricBrooksDotCom at 10:42 AM on May 16, 2000

Be careful of that GD Bid, Jason, you know Lance is always trying to pawn off Twinkies with all the cream filling sucked out.

er... that didn't come out quite the way I meant it to.
posted by CrazyUncleJoe at 11:28 AM on May 16, 2000

It's in fact a joint licensing deal, whereby Jason adopts Blogger for kottke.org in return for Pyra funding his "web developer's brunch" fund. Winners on both sides, see...
posted by holgate at 11:31 AM on May 16, 2000

Careful, Jason, those crafty silivalleyians may have actually been offering 1497 lire ...

Anyway, this is more good news for Pyra. Eventually they're going to hire people we haven't actually heard of and who don't actually do anything interesting (paper clip wrangler?). That would be a good time for me to apply.

No, wait:

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Spanish Internet service provider Terra Networks SA agreed to pay about $12.5 billion in stock for the U.S. Web portal kottke.org, giving Terra a valuable source of online content and ending more than a year of acquisition discussions surrounding kottke.org.

There you go!
