Let 'em go, boneface!

This is beautiful, although slightly enweirdened by my after-acquired knowledge that Skeletor is He-Man's uncle. (Yes, that is what is weird about this.)

I have no idea what they are selling at this place, or where it operates, but it's been decades since that was required to make a successful ad. I think I'll let it remain a mystery.

I love these ads. I remember seeing the first one sometime earlier this year and going, "My god, this is brilliant."

In the second link when Skeletor woke up and there was a black cat next to his bed, I immediately flashed back to this.

MoneySupermarket is a for-profit aggregator of various financial products like insurance and loans. It operates in the UK; I don't know where else it operates. (I suspect that it owes its existence to regulatory requirements that loan & insurance providers allow resale of their products, but I don't know the details. I've only lived in the UK for 2 years now.)

I have no fucking idea why he-man and skeletor are relevant to it.

It is 2017; we live in the post-Mad Men advertising apocalypse, where the co-opting of the counter-culture to sell fizzy sugar water pointed the way to this. That being said, it was a funny ad and I'm all for ad people bringing the funny because far too much of the rest of life is a hellscape.

"enweirdened"? Hm. I never heard that word before I moved to MetaFilter.

By the power of Greyskull, it's a perfectly cromulent word.

My guess is they occupy that sweet spot where they're fondly remembered by the target demographic, but not currently popular enough for their rights to be priced out of reach.

Also, MoneySupermarket likes to include a generous serving of cheese in all its ads, so these guys are perfect.

These commercials are a ridiculous treat - the costumes were on point.

It's a Supermarket for your Money. It's an exercise for the reader/consumer to decide the implications of that.

Some time back Cartoon Network tried rebooting He-Man to be a more modernized cartoon. Their take lasted, I think, two seasons. I thought it was pretty good overall; they gave characters backstories they never had before, they kept some of the occaisionally goofy humor, and the production was a lot more self-aware than it was before. It should have gotten more than it did. (They did something similar with Thundercats a bit later, although it was a lot more serious.)

Well, one of the bits of the expanded backstory was that King Randor's brother once tried to usurp the throne. He got the ol' splashed-in-the-face-with-acid treatment, leaving an animate skull behind because magic, and so, Skeletor. But, in that way fans of real-world monarchy know all too well, that means He-Man, aka Prince Adam, has for his worst enemy his uncle.

So, Skeletor is only He-Man's uncle in the world of the reboot.

Because if the eighties and nineties were dominated by boomer nostalgia and the 2000s by gen-x punk rock nostalgia, it's now finally time for the early fucking millennial nostalgia boom.

1. I love this; agreed that the costuming is fantastic (such shiny muscles).
2. I have a fond childhood memory, I must have been four or five, of waiting for family to arrive at the airport while watching a dime's worth of He-Man on one of the coin-operated television chairs they used to have.

True; what I meant was that the ad business will take from anywhere in the attempt to sell.

Now when a bank makes a similar series of commercials with Space Ghost and Killface (from Frisky Dingo) I will know they're directed, um, directly at me.

Okay, I've been to their website, and I'm still kind of mystified. I can only conclude this is something we just don't have in the US. They seem to be some kind of weird cross between and insurance company, a bank, an electrical utility, and a broadband provider. They can also set up my vacation, but that's on a different site.

And, obviously, they have an app that...does something.

They are indeed a service aggregator. There are a number which help you find the best deal on insurance or loans or cat grouting services. They take a cut of any deals but add value by providing helpful advice and guiding you through the cutthroat world of dog welding.

Think of them as a travel agent for all kinds of services.

And you don’t have them in the US?...

He-Man isn't millennial nostalgia, though, it's Gen-X. (At least when it comes to the original toys and cartoon, which started in the early 80s. I know this, because I was all about that shit.)

Though that relationship was hinted at all the way back in 1986 in one of the minicomics that was packed in with the action figures.

But then, those minicomics were an entirely separate continuity from the original show. Which confused a lot of kids!
