"Mythology to me has always been about bigger than life struggles"

With just an ordinary ballpoint pen, the kind we’ve all used to scribble down classroom notes or phone numbers for possible Friday night dates, Toronto-based artist Rebecca Yanovskaya creates exquisite, magical worlds filled with mythical beings and characters out of creepy old folktales which she then blings up with a lot of 22 karat gold leaf.

Oh, these are gorgeous. They remind me of Yoann Lossel's beautiful gold-leaf work.

Wow! 'Bling up' is a bit of an understatement here ...

You know, I like to console my feelings of artistic inadequacy by telling myself that if I had better tools, better materials, better sources I could create masterpieces. Then I see something like this and I am forced to confront the truth. Literally jawdropping. Thanks for posting.

If you haven't already opened the links, do so, but be aware there is some artistic nudity involved, in case that does not sit well in your surroundings.

The Bluebeard's Bride series in particular I found extraordinary! Just amazing.

Gold leaf is a lot less expensive than you might expect, shockingly easy to use, and looks fantastic.

Which I say not to diminish Yanovskaya's (literally) brilliant use of it, but to encourage other artists to give it a try.
