McDonald's Store is a family business in the town of Hot Coffee, Mississippi. They sell shoes and brooms and ice cream and PVC fittings and hoop cheese and souse. They've been open since 1967. They just repainted.

Is there supposed to be a link for repainted? It seems like a nice place, but.. not quite getting it.

Pepsi Blue. So tired of these obfuscated shills for Big Mom & Pop and the Chip Man Cabal.

dang man I have never been to Hot Coffee but this store has a vibe I am familiar with and kind of miss.

There was a little shop like this in rural south Mississippi called, and presumably run by, Lurline Screws. My dad stopped us on a road trip to take a picture while I died of embarrassment (being young) but the place wasn't open at the time.

(on further looking into ancestry.com, it appears that the store was in Holly Bluff, and that the proprietress, who passed away in 1991, was known as Aunt Sis)

I have been to Hot Coffee, but I don't remember ever stopping at this store. Next time I'm in the area, it looks like a must-visit.

I assume this post is just here for me to confuse with the old lawsuit.

Well?!

Do they sell hamburgers or what!

I assume this post is just here for me to confuse with the old lawsuit.

Could be worse. I had just finished a short stint of playing Grand Theft Auto V a few minutes before seeing the post. Hot Coffee has an entirely different meaning in the context of GTA...
(Anyone who doesn't know can look up "hot coffee mod" in your search engine of choice, but I'm not going to link to it here.)

The mystery of the repainting leads to further investigation. It appears that this place (plus the Baptist church) basically is the town of Hot Coffee. Is J&H Harper Grocery still open?

Lovely long-form photo essay here.

The old paint is visible here.
(and on their photos page in the facebook.)
This still leaves me wondering what the new paint looks like!

I had never heard of hoop cheese, but it sounds delicious. I'll have to look for it in the weird cheese section of our local stores.

I think it would also make a great faux-fanity, as in, "That's just a load of hoop cheese, and you know it!"

Their Facebook page says that their website is mcdonalds.com. It is not - that is the website of McDonald's Hamburger Restaurant and Chicken Nugget Emporium.

I also am confused. This is a link to the Facebook page of a random small-town store? With a couple of tangentially related links?

MS mefites, I trust you know what to do. I look forward to the McDonalds store's Facebook post about the "Friends of Matt" who showed up and cleaned the store out of beans.

What is this, and why does it matter?

It's fun, and the little stories and pictures about visitors made me smile. Substance-wise, it's basically up there with cat pictures, and that's pretty great.

On the subject of hoop cheese: think of red wax gouda with a cheddar (mild - not sharp) flavor component; and it's never been refrigerated.

Think of going to the 'corner' country store that was 7-11 before commercialization took over most things rural.

Hoop cheese is visiting grandparents and going to 'Floyds' with grandfather; old guys sitting in ratan chairs near the back; everyone asking about the family; grandfather sending a mysterious signal to the proprietor and magically, a small slice of hoop cheese is cut off the wheel for grandfather to eat while the guys mildly jawed about weather.

The small, silent child that was in tow, marveling at the magical 'free' cheese that was proffered with no exchange of funds: a time of innocence about living on store credit till the crops were harvested.

Hoop cheese is the IGA, Piggly Wiggly, Wilsons and A&P grocery. Wedges of the red-enrobed orange cheese now wrapped in plastic; waiting in the meat case there between the porkchops and the chicken legs. Hoping that Mom decides that today is when another wedge manages to make its way into the cart to be tallied up at the cashier's station and nabbed up by the bag boy to be nestled among the cold goods into a paper sack.

Hoop cheese is helping Mom unload the groceries and waiting for the offer of a small slice for snacking: peeling off the red wax; allowing the creamy goid cheese to mellow in your mouth while forming the hand-warmed wax into a square or ball missle that's lobbed at brother's head.

I really wanted to like hoop cheese. The name! The folksy local culture aspect of it! I got it at a rural store where it was sitting out! But it was just boring and flavorless. Womp womp.
