All the colours of Canadian parks

To to mark Canada's 150th anniversary (previously), Jana Dempsey, who created Hand Maiden Fine Yarns in Halifax, made a collection of yarns dyed in the colours of 13 national parks across Canada [Facebook], one for every province and territory.... Dempsey said the idea for the yarn collection grew out of her love for camping and knitting while camping. To pick the colours, she and her staff highlighted features of each park and chose the different yarns' hues based on that. (CBC.ca)

This is really neat. Thank you for sharing! That skirt from the last link is so pretty.

I have no ties to Canada whatsoever, but you show me pretty dyed yarn with a theme and my hands just curl into a grabbing motion and can't stop.

Get behind me, Satan. You cannot tempt me today.

I've only been to a few of Canada's Nat'l Parks but was able to recognize each one's yarn color (as well as the ones I realllllly want to go to) immediately. (The Fundy one could have held up a sign, it was that obvious - how did they do that?!) That's just. . . amazing how good a job she and her team did! What a talent. Almost makes me want to knit to use these.

Really enjoyed this post, thanks FLT.

Knitting these together into a scarf would cast a spell for national unity and preserving Nature.

Oooh, if someone did those for my favorite US National Parks I would buy them. (Nothing against Canadian parks, but I'm not familiar with them.)

What an excellent tribute to Canada's parks and nature!

Photos really don't do Handmaiden yarns justice. They are gorgeous in person. I mean, most wool/silk blends have a glow to them, and most small producer dyed yarn of any fiber content is lovely, but these are exceptional.

Even if you do knit or crochet, this is one of the yarns that you buy and just stare at, then squirrel away. Sometimes you take it out just to look at it and pet it, contemplating what you might make out of it, if only you were more skilled or had enough of it...

Sorry. What were we talking about? Right. Canada!

Of course SK gets given yellow and blue... because it's not like we have all the aspen parkland or anything... my home province never gets any of the nice tributes. We have more than farmland, I promise!

That being said, the yarn itself is gorgeous. Makes me wish I was better at crotchet.

You're in luck... Indie Untangled is doing a similar series with several dyers and other tie-ins this year and next. They're issued as limited editions, so the first two (and matching bags) are already sold out, but you might be able to find someone destashing and watch for the rest of the series to be announced.

Nice- thank you, bunnysquirrel. More yarn posts on Metafilter, please! I'm just starting to learn about the world of indie yarn.
