Same Love, Mate!

In the midst of Australia carrying out a non-binding survey on whether same sex marriage should be legal, the Grand Finals of the National Rugby League will take place in Sydney this Sunday. Scheduled to perform at the half time show is US rapper Macklemore, who has declared he will be playing Same Love in support of legalisation, igniting a firestorm of opinion on Macklemore and politics in sport from all sides of the political spectrum and from seemingly every living Australian politician.

Three guarantees in life: death, taxes, and social conservatives using the phrase "rammed down [people's] throats" to describe any public support of gay equality.

Our long national nightmare continues...

Pity us, friends. These are dark days. Exceedingly stupid, ridiculous days. But dark nonetheless.

As some wit said on twitter yesterday: How about we take politics out of sport in return for them taking religion out of politics.

Or Tony Abbott out of politics OR sport. Or Earth's atmosphere, for that matter.

Can you blame us? It's not like we're getting any from our government.

Right? I swear they use it so often it's like, do I detect a hint of wishful thinking here?

I find this story hard to believe mostly because I still can't believe that Macklemore would perform at the NRL Grand Final.

Equality Campaign’s ‘vote YES’ text messages upset some

Oh hark, the fluttering of false outrage...

Cory Bernardi launches robocall campaign to urge a million no votes in postal survey

Fucking hypocrites. The lot of them.

Bernardi needs to be run out of politics on a rail. Thankfully he might after starting his own minor party.

I had a look at some Australian online propaganda connected with the poll. It's terribly familiar - lots of splenetic reactionary websites that try to look like grassroot organisations but can't be identified as to source, linked to by trolls who plug away on social media, Youtube comments, etc, but never engage; and cross-linking with a badly defined but awfully recognisable Infowars-ish WE TELL THE TRUTH type synthetic outrage merchants.

It's a playbook that can be deployed whenever there's a chance to harm liberal democracy and progressive policies, and by the look of it it's pretty automated by now.

To be fair, it fucking annoyed me and I didn't even get one. My partner did though.

Doubly so 'cause we'd both already returned our non-binding plebiscite 'Yes' votes - and because they were not only pissing off conservative 'No'-voting arseholes, but also people who might be leaning 'Yes' but still on the fence.

Will Australian right-wingers borrow from the Joe Biden meme & tell Macklemore "You ain't real hip hop, bitch!"?

Sure. But until that happens, at least he's being quite productive.

Funny story - it turns out that he really likes money.

Automated by who? Possibly a certain ex-KGB kleptocrat in charge of a major world power that also tampered with U.S. elections and the Brexit vote?

I'm still pissed at Macklemore for bringing crowds to the Thrift Store... it's a lot harder to find comic books and 2XL shirts these days...

I don't see what all the fuss is about. I cheerfully loathe the footy and even I know the important game is happening in Melbourne (go Tigers!) where we will be having performances from The Killers, Mike Brady performing "Up There, Cazaly" and Dami Im, the Korean-Australian Eurovision contestant from 2016. I'm pretty sure Pauline would only approve of one of those. And if The Killers do "Somebody Told Me", does it count as pro or anti SSM?

Sadly, there's no evidence of that. Australia does not appear to have a shortage of local bigots.
