Be a Planetarium and Explore

Kelli Anderson has a new interactive pop-up The Planetarium that works. Not only do things pop-up but there are tools to use. If I still collected movable books, this one would already be in my collection. And she has a fabulous website to explore, among which is a pop-up with a working pinhole camera. Here's the link to the website blog. She does a lot more than just pop-ups, as you'll see. Enjoy!

My ten year old LOVES pop-ups, and at this point he has some pretty cool stuff in his small library. I'll be showing this to him so he can get an idea about what goes into the design process.

While I appreciate the creativity in designing the pop-up mechanisms, the planetarium design appears that it may have issues with light leaks that would make its practical use frustrating. (My favorite reference on pop-up theory and practice is The Elements of Pop-Up.)

Wow! What a great book! I almost ordered it from The Colossal Shop ($40), but just for the hell of it, I also checked Amazon ($29.82).

Great Book at a great price! It's my xmas present to myself.

I hesitate to say this - but - I ordered this book when I first read about it, and so I received it the day it was published. I'm a little bit disappointed. The pop-up structures are indeed amazing, but they don't all work so well. The musical instrument does not generate enough tension for all of the strings to work. I couldn't get the planetarium to work with my Ipod touch - maybe it needs a stronger light source. The code maker/breaker and the calendar do work magnificently.

I am not sorry I purchased the book. I am just a little disappointed. YMMV.
