I wonder if those birds are just having fun, or if it's some kind of "how to eat bivalves" instinct or what

Given the dropping and pecking behaviors displayed by that crow, it's definitely less "playing" and more "why won't this f@#cking thing OPEN!"

Maybe they think they're eggs, and they're trying to crack them open to eat them.

I worked at a golf course throughout high school, and one of the guys in the club shed figured out that if you took a hacksaw and cut through the outer layer of a balata ball and also cut a few of the rubber bands, then placed the ball in a vice and slowly tightened it, the core of the ball would eventually shoot upward at great speed, hit the ceiling and spray rubber bands in all directions. This was great fun, but as we discovered to our sorrow, a pastime best enjoyed when one's boss was not within earshot.

Though I have must doubts that crow is playing with the golf ball, this one is definitely playing with a ping pong ball.

The bird in that first link is a red-legged seriema, if you believe the comments.

The few surviving newspaper comics are rarely relevant these days, but this one is.
