The Game Awards 2017 Nominee Announcement! [YouTube] “The Game Awards nominees are in for 2017, and they are a preview of just how great of a year it was for video games. Four of 2017’s biggest games — The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Destiny 2 and Super Mario Odyssey — each received six nominations. Those were followed by strong showings from Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (five nominations), Persona 5 (four nominations), Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (four nominations), Cuphead (four nominations) and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (three nominations). Nintendo, in a hot race with itself for many of the awards, took home 23 nominations, the most for any publisher. The nominees were selected by a jury of 51 media and influencer outlets. Voting is now open to the public on most awards, and fans can vote via The Game Awards website, or on social media platforms. (Full instructions are available in this Medium post.)” [via: Polygon]

Super Mario Odyssey is worthy of a nomination and it's my own choice for GotY. That being said, even though I'm not a fan of playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), I think it deserves a win because of how dynamic and engaging the gameplay can be.

Voting evidently requires a Facebook account.
Starting today, fans can vote in all categories at TheGameAwards.com and using Google Search (just type “Game awards vote” into the search bar), and select their favorites via Twitter DM and Facebook Messenger interactions with @thegameawards
There's a workaround for those like myself who do not have Facebook or prefer not to use it.

But it requires Twitter. So social media is a requirement for voting.

What an amazing year. Between Zelda and Mario I couldn't possibly choose a favorite.

I forgot about Cuphead. Ugh, so many good games this year.

I really want to try Horizon: Zero Dawn, but no new consoles for me for a while, so I guess I'm waiting for a PC release (Red Dead Redemption is coming any day now, right?) or eventually borrowing a PS4 to play it.

ODiV, I wouldn't hold my breath for a Horizon: Zero Dawn PC release. That is one of those Sony exclusives that I really do not see them ever releasing on another platform. I'd look to borrow a PS4 from a friend/family member. I also want to play that game, I've heard such great things. HZD is one of a handful of games that are exclusive to PS4 that I'm always envious of, not enough for me to throw money at another console, but still...

West of Loathing and Opus Magnum both deserve to be somewhere in one of these lists.

2017 really was an extraordinary year for games. Any one of these nominees would have been a stellar GoTY literally any other year; we really do have an embarrassment of riches.

Having played all of them, I think I’ve gotta vote Horizon. All are wonderful games in their own way, but H:ZD just grabbed me and didn’t let go in a way that no other game has since the first Metroid Prime.

I wonder what led to Persona 5 nominations and not Nier: Automata, which everyone seemed to have more enthusiasm for during that crazy early 2017 period.

But I want to see Mefite's personal superlatives, along with your justifications.

GOTY:
Prey. Arkane released an essentially perfect System Shock game and nobody cared. Nobody has ever designed a more logical and completely realized virtual space on the scale of Talos I. I swear there are probably even enough bathrooms.

Indie GOTY:
Heat Signature. I love that this game completely encapsulates the creator's personality and taste in a way that communicates it to you. And it's just so easy to burn fifteen minutes infiltrating my way through ships.

Best online GaaS Game:
Rocket League. I now have a car covered in sushi.

BTW I meant to type "Ongoing" up there instead of online. I do think there should be an award at shows like this for "best service of an ongoing online game" since that's a thing many people Do Not Do Well.

I feel almost like Zelda: BotW may actually wind up being underrated for something like this, because it came out like eight months ago and is no longer quite as fresh in all our minds. Because it was just a stunning, incredible piece of work.

Pretty crazy year. I probably played Persona 5 the most, but thought about Zelda the most. PUBG is neat, a big zeitgeist thing, and very much a work in progress, and agree with its creator in not including it in GOTY consideration, for a bunch of reasons. I still need to spend some time with Horizon, which now has hefty, top tier DLC, and await Zelda's final bit of the puzzle. I beat Mario, and look forward to going back, but have been spending most my time with Stardew Valley Switch since its credits rolled, but still far from done, at 300 or so moons. I got A(n) ending of Nier, and am still in the early going of Yakuza 0. Prey and Dishonored : Death of the Outsider are both terrific things I've barely touched. I'll be playing 2017 titles well into 2018, because damn, did this year start strong and refuse to let up.

Fan Service of the Year goes to The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+. Every month this year they've taken fan suggestions of new pick ups and put them in the game. It reminds me of the early days of Minecraft, except with more community cooperation and less blatant stealing of ideas.

It's not remotely in the same league as these other games, but RiME filled my "charming, gentle, beautiful little indie game that was just what I wanted" niche this year that went to ABZU and Grow Up in previous years.

Definitely Nier. I don't think I've ever had a game make me cry more than once before, and for such incredibly different reasons.

This year has been amazing for games. The Switch turned out to be a great piece of machinery, and holding it reminds me of how perfect it feels. And that it has Breath of the Wild AND Mario Odyssey on it should be enough.

That being said, the game I played the most was still Cities: Skylines. BUT, my game of the year, the game I won't stop talking about, the game I've told everyone who will listen about is Night in the Woods.

Here's the thing: Night in the Woods is barely a game. There's some minor platforming, a few mini-games, but it has more in common with a visual novel than anything else. That being said, I have never been moved by a game in the way Night in the Woods moved me full stop. The game looks incredible, the music is beautiful and thoughtful (I love that Angus's theme has that bassoon in it), and the writing is superb, funny and sad and sprinkled with that low key horror you get when you can see someone fucking up hard and know you can't stop them. The characters dealing with some form of mental illness or another (and Mae is such and oblivious asshole sometimes and I love her so much). And oh my god, it has a Trumpian death cult at its center, and it officially went into production in like 2013.

Breath of the Wild may very well be the best open world game ever made. It continues to surprise me. But I'm still doodling fan art of Night in the Woods nine months later. Aside from the Sonic 2 release, I don't do fan art.

Night in the Woods got me hook, line, and sinker.

Of what I've played this year, definitely Nier.

I got A(n) ending of Nier

The route to the B ending is a bit of a slog tbf but it gets way better after that, make sure you get ending E.

I love games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, but man was it a frustrating experience after playing Zelda. A significant part of that game is climbing up stuff, and to go from Zelda's "climb anything" gameplay to Horizon's "better find yourself a colored rock to grab" was constantly irritating. JUST LET ME UP THE MOUNTAIN.

Don't get me wrong HZD is still a good game. Just don't play it near Zelda.

So social media is a requirement for voting.

In Chrome, with Google set as default search, just type "Game awards vote" into the address bar and you'll get a page of tiles containing the categories. Go nuts from there, once a day, from now 'til December 6. (Edit: you may need to be logged in to a google account)

Thanks for sharing that tip on voting achrise, that wasn't explained very well in the medium article, or at least I didn't comprehend it that way. Cheers.

Zelda, Divinity Original Sin 2, Mario Odyssey, Nier Automata and Persona 5 were all fantastic.

Pyre & Nex Machina could also get the indie nod.

My favourite game that I played this year but wasn't released this year though was Tactics Ogre. A tactics RPG, fine script by Alexander O. Smith and many branching paths according to the player's choices.

Well damn, it's on my list but if it's that good I'll just go get it now. Thanks for the recommendation.

It sounds to me like you might also enjoy What Remains of Edith Finch, if you haven't played it already. It's a lovely little game which hits a lot of the same notes you described about Night in the Woods.

I gave up on Persona 5 after about 40 hours in, when it became clear that no matter how interesting the skeleton of the game systems could potentially be, the absolutely awful writing and story structure was not ever going to improve.

Some of Persona 5's many issues could be tied to translation problems - none of these characters speak like the translation writers have ever participated in a human conversation in their lives. Maybe that even accounts for the spectacularly tone-deaf way it treats many if it's topics of child abuse and bizarre understanding of 'adults ruining the world because of their broken hearts'. But something tells me the sexual politics it presents would be roundly awful no matter how the writing was translated. The animated cutscenes seem to exist entirely for fanservice sexualization of every female character in the game. There are two of the most gratingly awful gay stereotype characters that exist only to chase around and try to molest a high school boy. Everything about it is head-scratchingly wretched.

And if that goddamn cat tells me to go to bed one more time I'm going to strangle it... There are a lot of interesting mechanics and systems in play during the game, but they are presented in such an aggravating fashion that it is frequently infuriating. 80% of the time you're given a 'choice', there's actually only literally one thing you can do and attempting anything else just gives a 'nope' message. The game clearly has no issue being 40% cutscene already, so there's no reason it doesn't just narratively bypass these aggravating moments and prevent the player from going 'maybe this is the time i can whoop nope' dozens of times over.

Also, there is literally no plot point revealed that is not repeated verbatim four times over, often in conversations that are back to back in the same cutscene sequence. Jeebus but this game cannot figure out if its audience is down for a plot filled with abuse, suicide and sex work, or if they are barely-literate toddlers with no sense of plot-related object permanence.

Does the game ship with original Japanese voice acting? Or is it only available with English dub voice actors?

It doesn't solve the other issues you've raised but I find that just like in anime, its better to go with original Japanese voice acting whenever possible. SUBS > DUBS.
