They were once Olympic rivals — one the captain of the U.S. women's hockey team, the other the captain of Canada's women's hockey team. But now Julie Chu and Caroline Ouellette are celebrating the birth of their daughter.

From Ouellette's Instagram: On November 5th, at 10:18pm, after 40 weeks and 2 days, Julie and I welcomed to the world our beautiful daughter Liv. I feel truly blessed to experience this incredible adventure with my love and best friend Julie. I did not realise it was possible to love this much until I met this little buddle of joy! It was a happy pregnancy for us. Liv was on the ice to win the Clarkson Cup with Les Canadiennes de Montréal this past March. We spent the summer coaching the sport we love with great friends. Thanks to our families and friends for your support and for being part of this new journey. Cheers to the sleepless nights to come!

The child is the Kwisatz Haderach of hockey. There is fear in the house of Gretzky this day.

These two did that hockey and you'll never believe what happened next!

This is great, and reminds me of this: -- for once, read the comments, especially the first...

You can't call it Yuri on Ice and not expect that somebody's going to come up with a genderbent hockey AU, but this is going above and beyond.

Liv Chu-Ouellette is the most Stephenson-esque Diamond Age name ever, as is having two moms who were hockey superstars. Actually that part seems ripped straight from a David Foster Wallace novel.

Who is the poor kid going to cheer for during the Olympics? Canada if smart, but what if she's not?

That's adorable! That's so cute it's like fiction.

It's not a typo, it's a neologism! (bundle + cuddle)

Their teams played against each other in the final gold medal round of the Olympics three times.

The movie pretty much writes itself.

For the first time in my life, I find myself inclined to watch hockey. What a great story!

For even more so cute it seems like fiction: Ouellette was pregnant with Liv when she and Chu won the Clarkson cup together last spring (the CWHL's championship.)

I am one of those outcast Canadians ambivalent to hockey, but I think my heart just grew three sizes.

I read this story in the paper twice in a row on my lunch break the other day because it made me so happy. Squee!

Mod note: Couple comments deleted. If you begin with "This is awesome but I guess I'll be that guy...", consider keeping it to yourself and just letting people enjoy the nice story without turning it into a fight about your ideas about pregnancy.

The kid is cute right up until they pull your shirt over your head and pound on you. Then to make it even worse Gary Bettman fines you for not having your shirt tied down.

We go see Canadiennes games whenever we can and Julie Chu is my daughter's current #1 hero. I'm so excited to read good things about her and also: CUTE BABY.

RIGHT? It's like Shakespeare's #1 plot: Fight fight fight fight --> LURVE.

Can someone with more knowledge of women's hockey tell me how much they would've lined up against each other during the big matches? It's probably in the articles, or I could look it up, but what positions did/do the two play?
posted by AJaffe at 8:29 AM on November 21, 2017

I was about to say no, because Julie Chu plays defense and Ouellette is a forward on Les Canadiennes, but it turns out Chu also played forward in international play. So it might have happened anywhere from occasionally to many times. Lot of variables, though, depending on whether they were playing on lines that often got paired in shifts, who was playing center, etc.

They definitely fought for pucks, though!

Yes no so many set head to heads at faceoffs but routine game play interactions (defence vs forwards) would generally be common.

THEY HAD THE SAME JERSEY NUMBER?!!
