Ratko Mladić was convicted for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia yesterday. This conviction happens twenty two years after the Srebrenica massacre, which formed part of the basis of Mladić's conviction. The Srebrenica massacre occurred during the Bosnian War, which was part of a larger armed, ethnic conflict that occurred with the breakup of Yugoslavia. Bosnia, home to Bosniak Muslims, Serbian Orthodox Christians, and Croat Roman Catholics, became the object of Slobodan Milošević's attentions. Milošević was President of Serbia and the topmost individual responsible for inflaming and exploiting Serb nationalism, and was the power behind Radovan Karadžić, president of a newly formed Serbian separatist government in Bosnia. Karadžić, as president, was in charge of Mladić, and was himself convicted of genocide last year. Milošević, who was the power behind the Bosnian Serb separatist government, was himself held by the tribunal for prosecution, but died before any verdict was reached.
