Pitchfork: The Best Music Videos of 2017
posted by Artw at 7:46 PM on December 11, 2017 [1 favorite]

No St. Vincent? "New York", "Los Ageless", and "Pills" are all brilliant.

I'm also fond of OMD's "The Punishment of Luxury" video, and LCD Soundsystem's elegant but simple "Tonite".

And, bonus points to "Missionary Position" by Sparks, though it barely counts as a music video.

Charlotte Gainsbourg's “Deadly Valentine” video has haunted me for weeks now. It's really powerful.

Another vote for Charlotte Gainsbourg's "Deadly Valentine" -- a contender for my favorite song AND favorite video.

Also, if anyone has any difficulty with the new St. Vincent album -- on first listen it struck me as uncharacteristically shallow compared to her previous work -- I recommend you stick with it and let it sink in. There's a lot to it, but I had to soak in it a while before I got what she was on about.

Finally, worthy of special note (already in the Pitchfork list) is the Fever Ray video To The Moon And Back, which is kind of a NSFW punch-in-the-ears in which someone put Fever Ray music into a kinky, perverted blender with a Peaches video.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about Amanda Palmer's cover of Mother since I first saw it. The video has its flaws but I find it incredibly powerful and moving. In part because it's just such a freaking gorgeous cover of an already emotionally wrenching song, and her facial expressions in this video are so raw and visceral.

Look What You Made Me Do, Havana, and New Rules are definitely this year's big pop moments.

I love it when artists get creative with a low budget though. A couple of my "they did that with that budget?" faves from this year:

Tinashe - Company / Features very attractive people doing slick choreography on a dance floor that lights up in time with the music.
Aly & AJ - Take Me / Click for a 70s vampire horror movie shot on film aesthetic and dreamy 80s pop music.

I love these year-end round ups.

Out of curiousity, is there anybody doing an ongoing Best Video of the Week, or something similar? Basically I'm looking for a blogger who will watch the dozens of videos released every day and just tell me about the cleverest/most beautiful/best ones. I asked about this a few years ago and didn't get any answers. Is there anything out there nowadays?

Stereogum does the 5 Best Videos of the Week every week.

I disagree with the omission of Tyler, the Creator's "Who Dat Boy?" which begins with him making a bomb under a Leonardo DiCaprio/Romeo + Juliet poster and ends with his driving away with a new face and a pretty boy in the passenger seat of a car being pursued by police.

This post sent me down a fantastic two hour rabbit hole last night and I just wanted to thank all involved.

How.....how did "Wyclef Jean" not make #1? Not only was it a creative video, but has all sorts of social commentary on 2017.

....Just bring back Pop-Up Video, please.

I didn't like it, then I loved it, then I saw her karaoke live performance, now I don't like it again. Oh well. The outtro of "Los Ageless" is still killer.

That "Wyclef Jean" video is amazing, if a little uncomfortable since it feels like the director has contempt for some of the typical hip hop video tropes.

ex-Antville represent!
Videostatic is an ok clearinghouse (though they could exercise more editorial choice)
promonews is a similar industry tool (good for finding credits)
VOTD is trying a panel&crowd-voted model
BOOOOOOOMTV does an ok job selecting music videos (etc.)
BangMedia is a curated Vimeo channel
OneThousandEyes is another mv curator's site
FantasticMusicVideos is yet another
FringeMusicFix has a more alternative slant

Dammit, thought this was going to be a Danzig cover.

Yeah, I've just seen it and I kind of regret doing so. Slight spoiler: The ending is literally crap.

Dumb question: What's the connection between the title of this post (Fiery the angels fell) and its content? I did some googling, but to no avail.

Was mainly thinking of the Grimes video but some of the others have stuff on fire too.

I think you misspelled Vagabon. Or were you thinking of Hurray for the Riff Raff?

Thanks Progosk and Palindromic.

Progosk, good to see you here. I used to lurk lots and post occasionally at Antville as jacobw. That was before I had kids. Now I have a lot less time for video watching -- hence the desire to have somebody find the best ones for me.

If anybody is interested, here's my own (highly incomplete) list of Some Music Videos I Like and the only one I see from 2017 is Go Up, so consider that my own nomination to the 2017 Best Of list.
