Do not need Ultraman

Rusborg (Русборг) is the largest international festival of military reenactors in Russia. Last May, during the Battle For The Bridge, one of the participants spotted a sky demon and brought it down with a mighty spear cast. The heroic deed was immortalized with a runestone.

The UPI story contains more background and a longer video of the festival (better-quality version here [loud Russian EDM]). If ground-level medieval mayhem is more your thing, looky here.

That drone took an arrow to the knee

As someone who loves historical reenacting and hates drones, I would like to see drone spearing become an event.

This is how every remote controlled aircraft-camera video should end.

Be careful what you ask for. Medieval Spearman Reenactor might be pronounced Milkshake Duck in Russian.

About how high up was the drone?

I think this is literally an event in Crusader Kings 2: The Old Gods. Maybe even including the drone?

About how high up was the drone?

From the gif, looks like maybe 15-20 feet? Pretty low, like single-story-building height.

Now I want someone to stat up sky demons for D&D.

I‘m surprised the drone owner wasn‘t pissed off. Wouldn‘t that damage the drone?

Yeah but what are they gonna do? Pick a fight with the heavily armed medieval Russian?

The article says that the spear-thrower was very apologetic and offered to buy a new drone, but it wasn't necessary: the spear had a soft tip, and the drone was undamaged.

I saw someone flying a drone next to a highway the other day, which seemed needlessly risky given that there are plenty of open spaces not next to highways. I enjoy the videos people take with drones (like that moose/wolf one that was an FPP the other week), but I'm not a big fan of drones themselves and wish that there was an effective option for regulating them better.

You’re in luck Dip Flash — the just-signed National Defense Authorization Act includes a provision that gives the FAA authority to regulate model aircraft. Expect reinstatement of mandatory registration for everything AUW > 250g to start, with the regs getting more restrictive from there. As a model aviation hobbyist I am somewhat displeased that Stupid People With Drones have resulted in additional regulatory compliance burden for everyone but considering how easy it is to fly a lot of COTS multirotors, I can’t say I’m surprised. As someone who uses multirotors for work, well, I have a 107 and comply with FAA regs already so I’m sure I’ll live.

I don't have the link to hand, but I'm sure that this is not a new video; I'm certain I saw this ages ago. Am I delusional?

I saw this on tumblr like a year ago, so no, it's not a new video. For those wondering about the aftermath, the spearman apologized and offered to pay for the drone, but the operator was understanding and suggested that drone spearing become an event next year.

It's more than a year old (May 2016).

And even if he had really taken it out, come on, it's worth a drone to be able to tell that story.

I have never personally lost a bird but I did set one on fire once (R&D effort, flying indoors, payload was too high, mistakes were made). I WISH I could tell “some dude chucked a spear at it” stories.
