Q#1 We should strive to remove hierarchy where we can: Choosing the selector “no opinion” is not an expression of affecting a hierarchy allowing for “no opinion”. I’m an agnostic by terms that frighten away an atheist, but not about policy. Having no opinion about many policy issues reads as a lie of omission to me. Or am I missing something obvious this morning?

Well they got the first one right, the other two are all way off. And I've never heard of the other three but Reagan = Thatcher, so nuff said.

Thing is many questions are so polarising, the union one for instance, unions are useful as they stop abuse, but unions often have bigger goals and see members as cannon fodder - having been used as such I see that question needs a weighting.
Or
"Large scale civilisations are unsustainable", how large is large? What is sustainable? Size is not the issue, the problems IMO are lack of system redundancy, ideology and religion supplanting science, designed inequality and social division.

  2. It's only fair if I say things to make sure they disagree with me, too.

Yeah, a lot of these questions are really hard without context -- put broadly, the "strong gov't vs. weak gov't" questions have wildly different answers depending on what gov't we're talking about here. Do I want a strong military for the US? Hell no! Should a workers' state have a strong military as long as there are capitalist countries trying to attack and undermine it? Obviously.

That said, Classical Marxism, Marxist-Leninism, and Marxist Feminism all at 100%, so thanks internet quiz for reassuring me of my choice to join a Marxist-Leninist party...

So, I got 67% Deep Ecology, 42% Kemalism, and 50% Marxist feminist. I did wind up clicking "no opinion" on a lot, though, because the questions seemed kind of all over the place and very very open to interpretation. Like, "We should strive to remove hierarchy where we can" - what kind of hierarchy? Do you just mean (as the pro/con section seemed to imply) hierarchies of power? What exactly constitutes an "unjustified power structure"? The police? The EU? Metafilter moderators? The person behind the bar who won't serve you because you're drunk?

Or "The betterment of society should be a primary goal of the members of said society" - what exactly do we mean by "betterment", here? Or "society", for that matter? You could pick any ideology and interpret it as agreeing or disagreeing with this statement, just through careful use of words.

I have a burning desire to hand this page back covered in more red ink than original text.

The problems here may be less with the test than with human political thought.

Third Way, the one that seems to show up randomly the most, inherently so.

Though I suspect it might be a softening of my attitude towards religion that might be responsible for me getting it. The introduction of atheist Nazis to the mix whose anti-religious sentiment is less "evangelicals are awful and should not drive society" and more "we can use this as an excuse to hate on brown people" caused some re-examination for me there.

This needs to be a test with an introduction that clearly spells out the expected definitions of terms like society and culture which is followed by at least one hundred but preferably more questions that ask about general principles and specific applications of principles. Then, maybe, it might work in giving the user a tool to navigate their political leanings. As it is now, why not just post this on OKCupid?

Yeah, a lot of these are weird mixes of pragmatic and principled questions, or mix some description that I agree with to an extent with a conclusion I strongly disagree with, like, yeah, some unions in some countries/industries/cases have lead to a whole lot of corruption and inefficiency, but that doesn't mean I think they should be illegal. I suspect I'd score more radically if I didn't have to hedge my bets and second-guess the questions so much.

Yeah, I don't really think this or any other political quiz should be regarded as any more than a toy, a conversation-starter, and maybe an opportunity read up on some political ideas outside your normal frame of reference.

One interesting thing that occurs to me thinking about the kinds of ideologies included, and the questions this quiz asked to differentiate them, is that some of them are kind of apples-and-oranges comparisons. E.g., is it really sensible to compare "Third Way" liberalism, Classical Marxism, and Marxist Feminism on the same footing? Is Third Way liberalism even really an ideology, or is it a strategy, or policy methodology? Couldn't Marxist Feminism be read as more of a school of political criticism than an ideology per se? Classical Marxism seems to fit the bill of an ideology, but it is also a school of political criticism. My relatively high agreement with it as measured by this quiz probably reflects more my growing acceptance of Marxist criticisms of capitalism than a genuine alignment with the ideology, as I have similarly strong reservations about the positive political recommendations of Marxism, but these didn't feature as strongly in the questions asked.

And while the first two are a little questionable on the organizational front (unless you count Alcor and the cryonics movement as a stand-in for the extropians), the third is a no-shit political party with a manifesto and candidates and a uniform.

Hrm. Also, I notice, no sign of accelerationism or neoreactionism aka Dark Enlightenment, the two scariest and most rapidly emerging ideologies of the new century

Anarcho-naturism/feminism 75% and Communalism 71%. I've read Walden once upon a time, but I'm happy to read The Voltairine de Cleyre Reader and Post-Scarcity Anarchism at some point.

Also -50% for Paleoconservatism, Pancasila, and Caliphate unsurprisingly, well presumably you cannot score below -50%.

I left many No Opinions when I felt the question came off imprecisely worded:

Yes, "we should strive to remove hierarchy where we can", except what do you mean by hierarchy? If I left this as only slightly agree then also scored 62% Classical/Feminist Marxist, which makes zero sense, and 67% Deep Ecology, which likely makes sense.

"We should strive to abolish wages" sounds great, but also so futuristic that I cannot imagine clarifying the details. Yes, "Communism [was] a [horrible] failure" but what the hell is "any such system"? I've no idea if "Taxation of land and buildings should [eventually] be the primary source of government revenue", not right now, but maybe eventually. All these No opinion for extreme vagueness.

To me, a question like "Government should only be involved in the administration of vital services like the police and fire services" sounds silly because obviously companies will not provide needed services, funding, etc., but neither do governments do so willingly.

In fact, I actually support strong voting reforms like demarchy/sortition as opposed to true anarchism, but favor a non-hierarchical government structure, in which modified referenda allocate the budget and portions of government are permitted to simply fail when the citizens withdraw their funding.

In essence, we need to spend more on education, science, environment, real technological development, etc. than on the military, but no existent government style has ever managed to do so. I'd therefore suggest we try asking every citizen to write down how much they want us to spend on different area of government.

I'm not like vehemently pro-democracy, anti/pro-hierarchy, etc. but I simply do not believe that any political ideology has the capacity to overcome human nature in the ways needed to implement the reforms said ideology espouses. We cannot design authoritarian regimes to overcome human nature, well not one run by humans anyways, so we must design democratic institutions to maximize our chances of reaching the correct decisions.

I'd say read A Darwinian Left: Politics, Evolution and Cooperation by Peter Singer,
some math about voting systems, etc.

I similarly gave No opinion to ".. underground markets.", "Society [imposing] code of conduct", and "proud of my culture" for much less important reasons.

Same here. It's silly (in my opinion) to overuse "No opinion," and in general to overthink the test. Come on, it's a fun thought-provoker and argument-starter, not a serious attempt to place everyone exactly. Yes, if it had a thousand possible political positions and ten thousand questions it would doubtless do a better job, except that nobody would take it.

My top three were Anarcha-Feminism, Individualist Feminism, and Queer Anarchism... which as a straight white man who has historically viewed anarchist solutions with extreme skepticism, I find fascinating. I mean,
I am often described at work as “that guy who really cares about process”.

I suspect that this is a case where my answers managed to reflect my view that “power structures really suck” without also including “but they are often necessary for actually accomplishing things, and should therefore be well designed”. Also, “women and queer people are actually real people”.

However, I now have a few new articles to read! Which I suspect is the real purpose of this quiz.

Anarcha-feminism 100% / Classical Marxism 88% / Marxist feminism 88%

"Fusionism" is apparently a post-WWII fusion of Christian fundamentalism and Libertarianism, combining the dogmatic authoritarianism of one with the "merit-based" snowflakeism of the other.

I had to put some thought into interpreting several of the questions, especially the religion ones. Eventually, I settled on the standard "liberal" answers - religion should not be a core part of government - but I had to wrestle with it, because I tend to think most governments would be better with more acknowledgement of people's spirituality. (I would really really like us to get away from the neoliberalist notion that all human interactions should be modeled as economic exchanges.)

But that doesn't mean "build a specific religion's principles into the government." I'd like to think a government could be supportive of religious devotions and religious diversity without needing specific religious leaders in positions of power, and without one religion's ideology baked into the structure.

A great deal of no opinions to several of the statements because, like jeffburdgess, the questions were ill-defined. "It is moral and justified for someone to profit from ownership of private property " Are we talking rent seeking, or are we talking owning a business that serves the community. Because both are owning private property and both are profiting from it.

"The betterment of society should be a primary goal of the members of said society " what is the betterment of society? A more just, more equal, society in which every individual has the humanity of every other human drilled into them as the basic focus of education is a better society to me. And then we get into definitions of just, etc. Slightly agree, because it's so vague.

"Society should not seek to impose any specific code of conduct on the individual " Yes and no. Consent and harm are what matter. Codes of conduct that prevent harm to others are ideal. Codes of conduct that restrict what an individual can do to themselves and those who consensual participate in whatever activity should not exist. Are we talking about codes that hold people directly responsible for actions that harm others, be in shooting someone or dumping toxic waste, or are we talking no gay people type codes?

"The rights of the individual should be paramount " Which rights? Economic rights, ownership rights, civil rights, bodily rights? Where do things like gun rights fall? What about owning a car that is in bad repair and may cause an accident? Does it matter if the person is unable to get repairs made?

I guess I've become too much of a pragmatist to answer these questions. Also, people could agree with the statement while fundamentally disagreeing with the conclusions I'm drawing from it.

The quiz is poorly designed. The highest match I got was 62%, with several versions of Marxism there. Given that I view Marxism as starting with a small cadre of individuals who take over a revolution (and who are supposed to then put themselves out of power, but that never happens), I will never support a Marxist movement. The ideas are pretty but anyone who wants power should not have it and no revolutionary organization has ever been created by people who do not believe that they should have power in the end because they will put things right.

I think that's more what's called Marxism-Leninism, though one stereotype that is fairly accurate is that you are likely, talking to most any sort of self-identified Marxist, to get a variety of opinions about who has the right and wrong ideas about Marx.

So I took the quiz and got pretty much the same answers as everyone else here.

Classical Marxism 75%
Anarcha-feminism 75%
Third Way 75%
Marxist feminism 75%
Mutualism -25%
Fusionism -21%
Paleoconservatism -50%

The thing is, as I'm taking it I'm becoming convinced that I'm not as Left as I think (as opposed to the first time I took one of these many years ago, where I was way further Left than I thought), so the results were a little surprising.

I don't think there's a problem with the quality of the questions. They need to be vague. What some people want is for it to be more obvious "what answer gives me the outcome I would like to get" and that's not very helpful.

The real problem I see is that there are not anything like enough questions to get a nuanced result.
That's why everyone is getting nearly the same result.

And to me it's kinda mushy as a governing philosophy, because both Communist China and Nationalist China claim to be a continuation of 3PP. And it's not like the Three Principles are like greed, being an asshole, and never tipping. They're being supportive of nationalism/populism, democracy, and the people's welfare.

Yet, the maligned 3rd Way seems to be much more popular than 3PP. Except for me, where 3PP is #2 (though tied with two others).
