Good news for Mac-owning, Celine Dione fans

"The process is pretty easy: I took a bit of electrical tape and applied it to the edge of the CD, the 'shiny side', - just a half inch of the stuff - and aligned it with the very edge 'data track session ring' visible on these copy protected CDs. Took the tape out to the outside of the CD and put it in my CD Rom."

Ha! I laugh. I wonder how time, energy, and money was spent to put these copyright solutions on these cd's versus to circumvent them. At least it probably kept some people employed for a while.

That's a lot of trouble to go through just to hear Celine Dion. This sounds like the stuff people used to try back in the 80's to make CDs "sound better".The green marker thing, stuff like that.

Actually, it reminds me more of the "hole-punch" method of "double-siding" the 5 1/4" floppy disks of the C64/AppleII days. Low-tech beats hi-tech almost every time.

I got a telephone call this AM from a guy in Government Relations at SONY Music, in response to my emails (see previous thread on this subject). He tells me that in the future, SONY will have "dual-layer" music CDs: 1 layer being playable on audio devices, one layer being MP3s that cannot be copied off the CD but can be played on the CD (I wonder how they'll manage that?). He says that there will be a warning added to all protected CDs that using them in a computer may void warrantees.

one layer being MP3s that cannot be copied off the CD but can be played on the CD Why the hell would they bother? Is there any computer with a CD drive that *can't* play a normal CD? If the MP3s aren't downloadable, what's the point of all that effort?
