Elizebeth Smith Friedman Fascinating tribute to her at the NSA Hall of Honor (no, really) all about her exploits in coding and cryptography. And here's a link to a review of a new book about her The Woman Who Smashed Codes , which has a lot of info on how she got started in this field (weird older guy says "come home with me" and she does), recruits a man into the work and teaches him, then marries him and he starts taking all the credit. She also got paid less (surprise). Her mother chose the spelling of her name so she wouldn't get called Eliza: very clever.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is great! but yes, we just had a post on her and the book a month ago. -- LobsterMitten
