This is so harrowing and so compelling. I know some anthropologists / fieldworkers / ethnomusicologists that have stayed in conflict zones like this one for similar reasons, and the toll it takes is unimaginable. At the same time, the contribution this makes to (reliable, well-substantiated) historiography is immense.

What an amazing person Omar is. I can't believe the risk he took to tell Mosul's story. Yes he is a scholar. And a hero.
