No Breakfast for Hip-Hoppers

MC Hotdog 熱狗 is a Chinese rapper. His slightly absurd, very catchy music video features people in animal masks. It features the group Soft Lipa 蛋堡 , who ups the ante with more absurd costumes. Whether you speak Chinese or not, you'll be nodding your head and clicking replay.

I don't speak or read a word of Chinese so I'm hoping someone has more context! Are these acts really popular in China? This one by Song Yue Ting 宋岳庭 has a much more serious tone but I really like his flow. (possible epilepsy warning)

Excellent deployment of rubber animal head masks!

I was relieved to see the classic rubber horse head in the mix. I would have been sorely disappointed if it had not been there.

@AFABulous: MC Hotdog is Taiwanese, and very popular in China.

He was oddly banned in mainland China for 'vulgarity' for a few years, until he somehow managed to normalize his relations with the Culture Bureau and become a reality show judge for The Rap of China, the insanely popular hip-hop reality TV show.

Aw yeah that was exactly what my day needed!

I'm not too familiar with MC Hotdog's work beyond his collaborations with A-Yue, but 'No Breakfast' is clearly a diss track aimed at Crowd Lu 盧廣仲, a goofy indie rocker who blew up the college circuit in the mid '00s. He's mentioned by name mid-song (when one of the horse-heads is jerking off a guitar neck), and the backing melody and "hei-a hei-a" chants parody Lu's breakfast-themed 'Good Morning, Beautiful Dawn' 早安,晨之美 (another gimmicky video). Lu claimed the pro-breakfast position for rock in his story song 'Rock & Roll Style', which is probably what prompted this anti-breakfast stance.

I'm hard of hearing and rarely understand English rap lyrics until I read them, so I'm finding Chinese rap rather soothing. My brain doesn't have to work as hard. I like the flow and melody of this one, which reminds me of a sped-up version of Digable Planets.
