You just know that he was itching to beat Metallica's 300,000, don't you? Music industry PR people are going to turn this into a new sport: prove how popular your artist is by counting the Napster users. posted by holgate at 5:44 PM on May 17, 2000
Anyone wanna start a pool on how many false positives turn up? posted by harmful at 6:59 PM on May 17, 2000
Yeah, but if you were a false positive, would you challenge Dr. Dre? posted by mathowie at 7:15 PM on May 17, 2000
Dr. Dre is fat and slow, I have cat like speed, he's no match. posted by Mark at 7:47 PM on May 17, 2000
I have a feeling he's armed though. Are ya from Krypton? posted by john at 8:06 PM on May 17, 2000
Yeah, but Dr. Dre would hire a younger, faster rapper to hunt you down. posted by alan at 8:50 PM on May 17, 2000
Rappers are a dying breed. I'm sure they are all angry and itching for revenge on the non-rap world. posted by Neale at 10:58 PM on May 17, 2000
"angry and itching for revenge"? I could say something that would seem racist to some, but I won't. posted by jamescblack at 8:29 AM on May 18, 2000
Racist? If I said "New Wave bands are a dying breed. I'm sure they are all angry and itching for revenge on the non-New-Wave world." Is that racist? posted by daveadams at 10:21 AM on May 18, 2000
The part that confused me was the non-rap world, if you look at last week's music sales 5/10 are rap (Dre comes in 12th, must be all those Napster users). posted by fil! at 11:49 AM on May 18, 2000
That Napster s--t, if that gets any bigger, it could kill the whole purpose of making music. It's not just about the money … It's the thrill of going to the store; you can't wait till that artist's release date, taking the wrapper off the CD and putting the CD in to see what it sounds like. The Internet is taking the whole f--king thrill away from that.
Whew. Glad we finally know what music is all about. posted by alan at 2:57 PM on May 18, 2000
Oh, piffle. I hate jewel cases, I hate the plastic wrapper, I hate the case-length sticker that almost never comes off in one piece. I get the same moment of anticipation and feeling after I download an MP3 and before I queue it up. I don't have to spend 5 minutes unwrapping the CD; instead, it's 5 minutes downloading the MP3. It's not like record stores will ever really go away, either.
I'm very glad, by the way, that Eninem stated his position in calm, consise English without resorting to profanity.
"'If you can afford a computer, you can afford to pay $16 for my CD.'" ...Uhm, maybe your CD isn't worth $16 to me? I don't really have a choice in the matter, though. posted by hijinx at 4:04 PM on May 18, 2000
