Wow, those are some amazingly lame and unfunny movie reviews.

It's rare for me to find a movie reviewer that I can agree with consistently (although the Shuttlecocks' SMC comes close). I've found a number of reviewers who consistently despised the movies I liked, and vice-versa, and found them much more useful for making my viewing choices. I was hoping these bozos would provide that kind of resource, but they're not even that useful.

The Onion is usually in line with my tastes, and I've been reading so long that I've gotten a feel for the reviewers' quirks, so I know when to take their comments with a grain of salt. I've come to rely on them almost exclusively for movie and music reviews.

I agree with Brennan; it's actually more useful to know that somebody hates the stuff you love, or vice versa. I'm surprised with how often I disagree with Salon reviews, for instance. (But I've got to pay attention to names now -- I agreed with one of them wholeheartedly on, um, I forget, but I agreed wholeheartedly, I assure you, and that surprised me.)

I just can't get over the fact that some people think reading reviews is "letting somebody else decide for you", or watching Siskel & Ebert was them telling you what to see. That's absurd. For starters, the alternative, "see what you want and decide if you like it afterward", does nothing to discourage Hollywood from making bad movies -- which perhaps is one reason there are so many.

i'm sorry, but i have to disagree with you (re: these movie reviews). i don't think these people take themselves seriously. it's just a joke and should be taken as such. i think they're pretty funny and apparently i'm not alone. i hear about this site everywhere and from everyone.

Another comment on negative reviews (which I discuss in more detail in <plug>my weblog</plug>): An intelligently written negative review is more likely than most positive reviews to point out weaknesses in the film (book, whatever). That gives me enough information to decide whether or not those weaknesses are in areas which bother me.
