Smash Mouth All Star But It's Shrek
I forgot one.

Onion video is great.

I don't think I can watch more than one of these a day.

For fun, re: Shrek: replace every "rock star" with "donkey" and "star" with "Shrek" (courtesy of cortex)

I clicked on every link. I can't say I made it too far into most of them but still, I did at least attempt.

The one with Vonzell Solomon is actually kind of great. I typically find those sorts of things tiresome, but this song works pretty well in that context.

I am planning another karaoke night at some point. I am now wondering how many of (and also how quickly) my friends would abandon me if I insisted all we sing is "All Star."

(To be fair, I think this post has convinced me "All Star" is the only song that exists.)

(I ... uh ... also don't really hate this song.)

If they delete Fizz, MetaFilter loses like 90% of its gaming content.

He's cashing in his chips for this, and hitting the ground running. It doesn't make sense not to live for fun, and in this post there's so much to do, so much to see, so what's wrong?

I have a prank with a co-worker where occasionally I'll work in as many Smashmouth lyrics as I can into the Slack conversation and see how long it takes him to notice.

I've long wondered: what, exactly, did somebody tell him? The world is going to roll him? What does that mean, exactly?

And is he admitting he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, or is that too something somebody once told him?

And who is this somebody?

Yessssssssss, I love these. My only quibble is that you didn't include the classic "All Star by Smashmouth but every other word is "bee" from Bee Movie and the instrumental is Seinfeld."

That chiptune mix is oddly missing any glissandos, the overuse of which is kind of mandatory for the genre, and barely any arpeggios which I'm not terribly fond of but the demoscene seems to love. eg. The result is a song that feels more 1995 MIDI download than chiptune.

Pwnguin, I have found there are two kinds of things people mean when they say “chiptune”.

The first is stuff that’s full of arpeggios. That’s the mode that started in Europe on the c64 and spread to the demo scene.

The second is stuff that’s got the most boring beeps and patches possible, because it’s emulating the sound of NES music composed by Japanese people who had never met the crazy tricks the c64 scene used to try and make fatter sounds. The chiptune mix at hand is this kind of chiptune.

(The first kind of chiptune has shown up on the NES, pretty much entirely from UK software houses.)

Let’s do Steamed Hams But It’s... next! Or not.

I've long wondered: what, exactly, did somebody tell him? The world is going to roll him? What does that mean, exactly?

'Being rolled' in 90s Cali slang is short for 'being rolled over' - the world is going to take advantage of him. The 'someone' is clearly female, as she's then referenced doing an 'L' sign on her forehead, which I believe means 'loser'.

Basically, some girl told him when he was presumably a kid that he was an idiot and a loser and he would not survive the real world.

Given the incoherence of the lyrics from that point, it's unclear whether that was the case.

Ehhh, here's the Akumajou Dracula (japanese Castlevania 3) sound track rip. And the Crystalis soundtrack rips. Shatterfist for good measure. The Euro/c64 repeated rapid arpeggios IMO make everything sound like a nightclub and typically feels out of place.

And it's not like the Japanese composers didn't have their own tricks: the reason that first link sounds awesome is because Akumajou Dracula's composer Hidenori Maezawa --a real all-star -- designed an addon chip for the game which adds a few extra channels to kick out the jams with. Unfortunately the NES's lower pinout count meant I didn't even know what I was missing until like last year.

Anyways, beyond the lack of vibrato (which I guess is in keeping with the original) it's kinda weird how the Allstar chiptune chooses to arpegiate Chiptune Harwell's synth voice.

Gotta throw in some love for Jon Sudano in this thread. He sings the lyrics and melody of All Star over other pop songs (like Creep, Mad World, and Smells Like Teen Spirit) and....it works.

My favorite: ALL STAR, BUT IT’S 1 BEAT OFF

darksong, you should throw in some of these songs for your All Star karaoke takedown.

This is exactly why I can't hate on the song, it was a perfect fit for an underappreciated superhero comedy. Its continued association with/appropriation by the Shrek franchise still irks me, all these years later.
