Here's your opportunity to participate in something gravely important. I'm salivating in anticipation of the DBZ bashing on this thread (sarcasm).

I like DBZ. I don't have any idea who to vote for.

No DBZ bashing, but damn, a framed website in 2002. Wild.

It originally had a really annoying loop of the DBZ cartoon theme. This version of it courtesy of Upcoming Movies

Well I put in my vote for Wil Wheaton, I'll assume that's what everyone else is voting.

I can't think of a gleeful actor that could 'be' Goku. They're all brooding willises. Peter Deluise might suit Krillin, but Goku is hard.

I'll know him when I see him.

I love DBZ, but WHY?!? Leave well enough alone. Is there nothing that Hollywood won't wipe their ass on in the name of the almighty dollar?

I don't get DBZ or most of the Japanese anime. Only reason I liked Akira is because of the artwork, and having seen Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, I wanted to see the original death ray motor bike scene.

Try Tezuka's Metropolis, riffola: absolutely beautiful animation and great character design; the only flaw is that there's almost no comprehensible plot to speak of.

I second Metropolis. Yes beautiful, yes very nonsensical, very worthwhile eye candy. If you want something that has both beauty and plot (and the best damned music ever put into anime), try Cowboy Bebop. Cartoon Network is running it and the DVDs are near perfect.

As for DBZ, it's good for entertainment in a Clockwork Orange, eyes yanked open tied to a chair, forced to watch at gunpoint thing.

Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan. Set it in the future, with Gohan older, that way Jackie's age would fit. He has the skill and the slapstick humor (a huge part of DBZ) to make it work.

It would be beautiful. It would be the aging Gokou's fight against some tough new villain, with inexpensive but talented unknown actors filling in the other roles.

The indie video store I work at carries "Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins" a 1993 Hong Kong live action movie.

There are a billion HK actors that could pull off the movie well (actually, maybe a *couple*). As for the US version, no comment.

Forget Jackie, I am afraid. Jet Li IS the man...

I am afraid that all of you are wrong as far as casting is concerned. Remember, this is Hollywood. Think Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, Matt Damon, Ben Awfuck any "fresh, young, hot" actor we have seen 20 times over in bad casting decisions.

I agree with insomnyuk that it would be cool to have Jackie Chan play an older Goku, but I would also like to see a young goku. Hey, what about Hayden Christensen or Josh Hartnett, go Hollywood, go!
posted by bunktone at 4:47 AM on May 21, 2002

Actually, Hayden would be a good choice for Trunks. I mean come on, it's not like he needs to act or anything... I'm a fan of the series, but this can lead to nothing but a large pile of box-office bull-plop (Think "Double Dragon", only much much worse).

Well, it can't possibly be worse than Street Fighter, the movie, which means I'll take my 9 year old brother to see it in the theaters.

This film is doomed. They can't afford a decent cast *and* the necessary special effects. Think about it. Goku?? What about Chichi, Bulma, Yamcha, Master Roshi, Krillin, Piccolo, and Gohan? I haven't even made it out of the first episode character list. Only way to make this work is to only use, oh, no more than half the Z Fighters. And put even *more* expository speeches and powering up into the battle scenes.

They should just remake one of the movies, that would effectively limit the characters involved. Besides, if you hire unknown actors, you can keep costs low. *crosses fingers

Jackie Chan has the right personality but he isn't the right shape. Jet Li has the spinal column of Goku, but I can't see him laughing or ruffling his fingers through Gohan's hair, and he's certainly not calm enough.

(Jack Black as that huge hairy guy).

* snaps fingers *

Chris Klein. The jock from Election. As Goku. Yeah, I know, no martial arts background yadda yadda, and he's a little young, but everything else fits. No?

And suddenly I have this vision of Fran Drescher in either the Chichi or Bulma roles. Eep.

My vote for Chris Klein.

Yeah, get that Klein kid on steroids stat!
