I'm a Hot Knife

Martina Vinci organised a flash mob rendition of the Fiona Apple song Hot Knife in the Genoa Metro in Italy. After it was posted to the interwebs... Fiona Apple heard it.

What a terrific take on the original! Reaction videos being all the rage now (it's a meta life), Ms. Apple's reaction is such a delight.

I just realized I had mondegreened:
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
into:
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinnamon scone weee!
I admit to an unyielding fondness for cinnamon scones.

This was great. I now need to learn more about Martina Vinci, because she's got one heck of a voice, herself.

Apparently this is what I needed today (down to the doggo and normal-looking house and relatably full trash can) and I didn't even know it.

"That was a really great feeling."

Ok, that made me tear up. Also, I love her messy desk so much. I suddenly feel so normal.

Last night I was at a local DJ night, and one of the guest DJs is a local from what most folks here really well known band that's still actively touring that I'm definitely not going to name out of politeness and discretion.

We've DJed together a few times and share a lot of the same insecurities about performing, and weird, darker musical tastes.

Last night we were hanging out and I got to watch him go through some emotional reactions like this as he was standing outside having a break and we were chatting about music, and people kept coming up to say thanks and give support.

And this was just as he was saying "I don't know... I think that set was too nerdy. People probably wanted to hear Madonna or something."

He was paired up with a total newbie and first time DJ (who was just killing it, thankfully, but he's definitely got what it takes and has been practicing) and we encouraged our more experienced/toured friend to go in for another set and get extra nerdy, because, really, that's what we all wanted to hear, too, was new stuff he picked out we'd never heard before.

So he went and did that, a little sheepishly, and it was great and people loved it.

It always warms my bleak heart to see people like this being unjaded, uncool and real, emotional people even after so many years in the business as a performer. Seriously good stuff.

Fiona Apple having a nearly lifesize horse replica in her study is one of those things that once you see it, you feel like you always knew.

Oh, it's been too long since I grooved on some Fiona Apple, and this was the perfect way to bring back my love for her work.

The more I think about it the more convinced I become that the Lisa Simpson character is based on a young Fiona Apple.

That was great. Being introduced to the original was great. And, at the risk of seeming a dullard, being introduced to Fiona Apple is awesome. So thank you.

This is great, and it's fun (so please don't get me wrong) but:

I kind of wish people staged things like this in situations where others can leave if they're not into it. A subway is kind of a brutal place to have someone else's art inflicted on you. All I'm saying.

My first thought on seeing this, in fact, was of riding a subway in NYC and having it suddenly turn out to be show time.

The first thing I noticed was that poor woman, carrying her bags, holding onto that pole, and wishing her stop was closer so she could get away from this horrible circle of ridiculously loud hipsters.

For a performer who's unfortunately gained a reputation for being sullen and surly more often than not, Joyful Fiona is a revelation. That made me smile.
