A Time of Plenty: Celebrating Nowruz in America Nowruz is the Iranian/Persian New Year, occurring at the time of the spring equinox (this year, it was today, March 20th). A short essay about want and abundance amongst exiles. posted by praemunire (11 comments total) 8 users marked this as a favorite

Happy Nowruz! I love the spring equinox and all its celebrations.

One year I'd love to go to one of the bonfires. A few years ago I went to Persian dance performance to honor spring and was captivated. The feast recipes have inspred me to go to a Persian restaurant for lunch or dinner tomorrow. Yum!

I also enjoyed the pictures of the haft seen table and celebrations around the world, but the link to the essay didn't work for me (using Android phone here).

Sal-e nou mobarak!

Unsurprisingly, there's no haft sin at the White House this year. Instead, the pot says of the kettle, "Deceit has become official state policy."

Yesterday was just sunny enough in Toronto that determined families would have been able to dine in the parks. My office is near Sunnybrook, and the faint smell of grilling in the air as I left the hospital was very pleasing.

Happy Nowruz! It's the best time to have a new year.

Southern California has the largest Persian population outside of Iran. L.A. alone has about 500,000 Persians. The break room at my office could not possibly have more sweets in it than it does right now. Happy Nowruz!!!

Thank you for posting this here. I have had a class with Porochista, and she is a total delight, still incredibly generous in the face of all America's ingratitude today.

I am one of the people who filled an LA office break room with sweets. NO REGRETS. Nowruz mubarak!

In the southern hemisphere, does anyone celebrate Nowruz in September instead? Or does the tradition/history/calendar date take precedence over the seasonality?
