The Criminology podcast is onto season 2. Season 1 featured The Zodiac. They do a whole season on one case. Season 2 features a devastating case that incredibly many have never heard before. This case makes The Zodiac seem like a petty thief. It is all about a criminal who many believe is the most prolific, most sadistic, most intelligent serial offender/killer in Californian history, if not the USA! And seemingly way too lucky. Given the nature of the story, there are obvious warnings needed for sexual violence.

The case? “The East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker/Golden State Killer”. I haven't been to obsessed about true crime for many many years, but if my brother brings something to my attention, it's usually got something very interesting about it. This involves over 50 in-home rapes in and around the Sacramento area 1978-79. Known then as the East Area Rapist. Moved south to Southern California and evolved into a serial killer known as the Original Night Stalker. In the 1990’s DNA advancement would lead to a shocking discovery. The East Area Rapist & Original Night Stalker were the same man.

It was author Michelle McNamara who coined the name “The Golden State Killer”. Her recently released book “I’ll Be Gone In the Dark” is all about her obsession with trying to solve this decades old cold case.

Just a few points of interest:
*The GSK would stalk, prowl and ‘research’ his victims before each attack.

*He would often break into the home of his next victim and set the stage for the attack. For instance, 0pen window latches, leave bindings hidden to use during the attack; get a layout of the house and plot escape routes.

*He would make obscene and hang-up phone calls to victims and neighbors, both before and after an attack. Incredibly he rang one victim years later : “Remember when we played?” he taunted.

*He was brutal and sadistic. He thrived on control and instilling fear.

* He would spend sometimes up to 2-3 hours in the home during an attack. He’d ransack the entire house; he’d go to the fridge and make a meal and eat. He’d sit on a porch drinking bear. All while the victims remained bound and gagged.

*Victims would listen and wait for up to an hour once it went quiet before getting the courage to try and break free - only to discover the attacker had actually been sitting beside them the whole time. “Move and I will kill you and your son” he’d hiss between his signature clenched teeth. (Yes - children were often present and tied up in another room)

* He would simply appear standing at the end of the bed with a flashlight, blinding the victim as she awoke, and a knife in the other hand, and wearing a t-shirt, a ski mask and, in earlier attacks, no pants.

*His face was never seen, he left no prints and he escaped each and every time, avoiding each and every net cast by police as they responded - sometimes within minutes.

* A newspaper report alluded to the fact the EAR seemed only able to attack woman who were home alone or with children - there was never a male present. The very next attack, the EAR chose a couple, getting the woman to tie up the man first with shoelaces. From then on he mostly attacked couples.

* Once, at a town hall meeting held by police re the crimes, a man stood up and attacked police, questioning how on earth the perpetrator could get away with attacking women when they had their husband present. He would never allow that to happen. Never. Months later, this very man and his wife became victims of the East Area Rapist. WTF?

* So many more disturbing and mind blowing aspects to his case. And I haven’t even begun to write about his serial killing phase!!!

If you want to dive in, check out:
A ‘Golden State Killer Sleuths’ Facebook Group. This is quite abuzz, all these random strangers discussing the case and trying to figure it all out. In fact, some of the actual victims themselves and family of victims of the EAR & GSK are actually part of the group!

Read the book: “Case Files of the East Area Rapist / Golden State Killer by Kat Winters, and the afore-mentioned “I’ll be gone in the dark” by Michelle McNamara. The Kat Winters book is really good as a detailed and non-opinionated overview of each and every crime and suspicious activity before during and after an attack. It’s like a blue print of the case. Michelle McNamara’s is profund and adds more emotion to the story. She died suddenly just before completing her book.

Watch the 5 part HLN series “Unmasking A Killer”, and listen to the accompanying/companion podcast “Unmasking A Killer”

Watch the Investigation Discovery (ID) Channel’s 4 part doco “Golden State Killer:It’s Not Over”. Contra Costa County cold case investigator Paul Holes is one of the foremost forensic experts on this singularly chilling chapter in crime history. Holes figures prominently in the ID documentary series.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sorry for the delayed delete here; the framing with the bits of editorial voice isn't the way FPPs are meant to go, and the enthusiastic tone here is a pretty jarring combo with the horrible subject matter. -- LobsterMitten

Casefile did a five part series (six, counting the bonus interview episode with a survivor) on this case. (Case 53.) Utterly chilling stuff. If he's still living, time is running out to catch and bring him to justice alive. I wonder if the recent uptick in interest in the case has something to do with that.
