I just started reading The Metaphysical Club, which begins with Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. experience in the Civil War. He was shot three times and witnessed some horrifying events, which of course cannot help but have a profound impact.

It's amazing to me how few of the North were abolitionists though, and how many of even abolitionists were racists (i.e., to many it was sort of given that white men were superior; it was simply that that didn't give them the right to own & cruelly treat black men).

It also makes me wary of declaring things "constitutional" as that was one of the main arguments of the pro-slavery contingent; abolitionists (who were the extremists - there were other anti-slavery factions but many were happy with secession or 'live & let live' on the issue) burned copies of the constitution in protest and called it a worthless document.

Don't mean to steer the thread only to the first war you mention, but I just read this stuff so I can hardly help it :)

All Gave Some. Some Gave All.

All politics aside, to those fallen in battle, thank you.
