Gah. Ash Thorp is one of those people who is just so GOOD at what he does. Check out his work on the Ghost in the Shell movie here.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting so many explicit re-shoots of specific frames. The call out to the final minute of the film was especially nice.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting so many explicit re-shoots of specific frames.

And yet, it was perfect. Some of those specific frames are also the ones I can recall most vividly, especially the city. Pretty much the first 10 min are seared into my brain.

It could be because this was one of the first anime films I recall seeing. Upon reflection, it's kind of the wrong first anime film to see, and yet maybe not. It's so much, such a grand film in it's subject matter and how it tells this story. It overwhelms. It's like getting drunk too quickly.

It captivated me then, and it still does now.

I don't think the original version of Akira is even out anymore, the original English dub you'd get on VHS. It's bad. As in, the English translation and voice acting was bad in what was apparently a rush job. Around 2002 or so they released the DVD, which had a new English script, dub, and the film itself was edited to a degree I think. A much better version! I know people who didn't like Akira but that was based on the original; had they seen the newer (newest?) they'd be more impressed.

This quote is also worth noting:
“If someone wants to do something new with Akira then I am mostly ok with that.” ~ Katsushiro Otomo
I'm not sure how much room this would give someone to reboot or produce/write a sequel. I also don't know that we really NEED a reboot, but looking at this short concept trailer, it's something to think about. A shot for shot remake in this style would be a kind of re-interpretation of the original that I wouldn't be upset about.
