Inside Palmer Luckey's Bid to Build a Border Wall [Luckey's solution] merges VR with surveillance tools to create a digital wall that is not a barrier so much as a web of all-seeing eyes, with intelligence to know what it sees. (SLWired)

This post was deleted for the following reason: Posting this and then getting into "yeah but illegal immigrants! Gang members!" arguments in the comments is a pretty good argument that you should not have been posting this in the first place. -- cortex

As if we needed another reason to hate Facebook, Zuck gave Palmer Luckey the money to enable all his racist, neo-fascist dreams.

I was always down on VR in general and Oculus in particular, but I will freely admit that I didn't see this particular vector of badness coming.

(I still can't shake the feeling that the name "Palmer Lucky" is either a pseudonym or a novelist's creation)

It does kind of have a Kilgore Trout-y ring to it, doesn't it?

Dude is out to single-handedly ruin everything from Lord of the Rings, and I am 100% not here for that.

Fuck you, Luckey, for creating this fascist bullshit.

Fuck you, Jamie Hyneman, for agreeing to be part of this fascist bullshit.

Fuck you, racist ranchers, for gushing over this fascist bullshit.

And fuck you, Wired, for publishing this ass-kissing, worst-kind-of-libertarian extended advertisement for this fascist bullshit.

And what did Luckey learn from his experience at Facebook and Oculus? “Be careful who you trust,” he says. “Be careful who has control.”

Indeed.

ostranenie such as? he's caught a bunch of drug smugglers with it so far. what's the downside?

1. Palmer Luckey used his Facebook money to fund Alt-Right trolls who sought to disrupt the election, and has expressed support for banning Muslim immigration, the Birther movement, and other racist garbage.
2. Luckey is enabling a surveillance state that will, beyond the shadow of a doubt, be primarily used to harm people of color. Stopping a handful of drug smugglers is nice, but make no mistake, this tool will primarily be used to identify people of color who are coming to the US to escape poor conditions in search of a better life, separate families, and punish people for the crime of not being sufficiently rich and white enough to flaunt immigration laws properly.

Like, there's literally a point where they're talking about how awesome it is that this system can supposedly tell the difference between PEOPLE and ANIMALS (the caps are in the article) as if the current administration hasn't spent the last several years referring to even legal immigrants seeking asylum as subhuman, no matter what horrible circumstances have forced them from their homes.

> coming to the US to escape poor conditions in search of a better life

why can't they do that legally?

> referring to even legal immigrants seeking asylum as subhuman

are you saying that you'd rather have your daughter date an MS-13 gang member than a Republican?

Even if Palmer Luckey is a horrible person, why is a surveillance system that will keep out illegal immigrants a bad thing?

Trolling and making bad faith arguments can be fun and all, but is it really worth $5 a pop?

Ah, so this was just an excuse to fly your own bigoted fascist colors. Great.

I flagged it as trolling, too, but Ostranenie appears to have signed up way back in 2006. And he’s an engineer, to literally no one’s surprise. So I think this might be more about the Nazification of tech workers, generally, and the early Metafilter demo, specifically.

Right, ostranenie, flagged and moving on.
