Mortal Combat Theme, Acapella

Well, that was unexpected. Not at all in a bad way, but just further evidence that I'm really out of touch with how kids are growing up today. I've got so many questions...

It's literally the first thing you hear him say in the first 2 seconds of the video.

Sorry. It was so quiet and laid back I didn't hear it while I was adjusting volume.

That was utterly charming and delightful.

I actually had the opposite reaction! I was surprised and tickled how I connected with this. It took me back 20+ years ago when the arcade (!) game first came out, followed by the movie along with the ear worm single. I'm chuffed that Mortal Combat's still relevant to Kids These Days.

I had forgotten quite how much the (non-acapella) theme song sounded like one of the mega-cheezy mod tracks from Star Control 2...

It took me awhile to actually figure out what threw me about this, it isn't the kid geeking out on something he likes, that's charming and familiar enough, but the mix of seeming innocence of that with the, at least mild, sophistication involved in producing the video with its split screens and breakdown of the Mortal Kombat theme into parts, that it is Mortal Kombat he's singing about, and wonder about the overall worldview kids must have in sharing something like this to a worldwide audience that can even reach beyond their peer group.

It's the mix of familiar and radical difference that strikes me in how I was and saw the world at that age and how he might. It's without judgement that I find it all pretty staggering and have to wonder what it means or will lead to.

Yeah, I sure wasn't singing any themes to video games from my dad's childhood when I was a kid. Here I thought the persistence of classic rock was weird...

Not bad, but I think my favorite Mortal Kombat acapella is still this Central Park rendition by UC Berkeley's DeCadence. Even with all the wind noise.

The original film is on Netflix this month, if you need a refresher.
