Welcome to 2018

On Friday night the New South Wales Blues defeated Queensland Maroons 16-10 in the first ever Women’s State of Origin rugby match. After the contest, Queensland captain Karina Brown shared a kiss with her long time partner, NSW player Vanessa Foliaki. The National Rugby League had some words for any haters.

State of Origin is an annual Rugby League series between players hailing from Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Women had previously played interstate matches, but this was the first game under the more well known State of Origin brand. Brown and Foliaki are also teammates on the World Champion Jillaroos Australian National Team, where they first met. Facing off in State of Origin has been a challenge.

"If we can post a [photo] of Cooper Cronk and his wife Tara kissing, then we can share a photo of Karina Brown and Ness Foliaki sharing a moment too," the NRL wrote.

Great! But it boggles the mind that this even needs to be stated.

Best not to read the reply tweets. Unless you have endless hours to scroll through angry/confused/trolling replies.

Thanks for this--the 'shared a kiss' photo was sweet (if you skip the replies), and the highlights reel ('16-10') and background pieces under 'Women's State of Origin' and 'a challenge' were especially fun, though I appreciated the other details too.

Welcome to 2018, indeed.

I know little about rugby, but I enjoyed this post.

This was great (while obviously very disappointing that the NRL felt the need to "defend" it, I thought they did it well). I first saw the picture in Bec Shaw/Brocklesnitch's (a very ardently pro-QLD comedian) tweet ("This is disgusting. Kissing a New South Wales player").
