Ever wonder what it's like to teach kindergarteners? Perhaps it's like teaching chicks about magnets.

I just want to carry a chick around because they're so round and fuzzy and look like they fit in the palm of your hand.

A totally unrelated cute animal video that's only 14 seconds long is too small for a front page post, but it's ok to put it in a Johnny Wallflower post, right? [twitter video, tiny tiny frog]

Chicks don’t need to learn about magnets. Stop harshing their little peeping grooves, k?

Major flashbacks to doing prac teaching for my early childhood education degree.

It was all a bit much really, I need to lay down in a quiet room now.

I teach Kindergarten. He's not wrong. Needs 20 more chicks though! (I love Gerry Brooks! He not only seems like an awesomely supportive principal, he really gets the unique 'flavor' of Kindergarten.)

I'm going to bookmark that to show my student teachers. It conveys something I try to get them to understand all semester long.

No, you teach rats how to use martial arts and then it's turtles the rest of the way down.

His accent and manner remind me of some of my early teachers in a way that is still remarkably comforting. (Though the accent's not quite the same. I didn't know there were extra "er" sounds added to words in Kentucky! They tend to get dropped where I'm from.)

Feh... you can't... everybody knows you lick their underside and then the turtle is Mother Nature's suction cup.

I’m nearly 30 years out from kindergarten and the free-for-allness of those videos still spikes my blood pressure. On my report cards, the teachers always commented on my tendency to sit and observe for a long time before joining in. Given the dynamic nature of that scene, I’m not sure how I ever felt comfortable.

One thing that jumped out at me was how all the attention was given to the troublemakers. Can someone with more experience with kids/teaching provide some insight? Is that just his way of blowing off steam on YouTube? Is that what actually goes on in classrooms? Should it be? I’m thinking of my young self as described above, sitting waiting for the situation to settle into a peaceful, predictable learning environment where I’d feel comfortable coming out of my shell and participating in the lesson, and that not necessarily happening.

It’s what you get when you try to dump facts on kindergarteners (heck, on high schoolers) instead of providing things for them to do. Kids don’t learn by being told and/or shown stuff.

As I tell my college students, our naive beliefs about teaching go against every bit of research we have about how learning actually happens.

Yeah, despite it's bombastic title, Pedagogy of the Oppressed is really wondering at showing how teaching should work.
