Hurrah! Finally, a real video as opposed to a bunch of fake "teasers" on YooChoob. Also, interesting tidbit from Fury that he was "ready to hang it up." And her just walking into the subway with the teal costume makes me wonder if there were any public superheroes between Cap in WWII and Iron Man. (Obviously, the Pyms were active at one point, but probably not publicly, and I'm not sure if Agents of SHIELD have shown any active heroes in the last half of the 20th century...)

I'm roughly 99% certain it was a Skrull in disguise, but that doesn't make it any less odd/hilarious that the teaser trailer (the mass audience's first exposure to the character) literally shows our heroine, Carol Danvers, punching an old lady in the face.

The trailer was a pretty standard Marvel trailer, but while I'm kind of bored with the Avengers I've quite enjoyed the "here's a new character" films they've made over the past few years (Spiderman Homecoming, Black Panther, Ant Man), so the film could be fun.

To me, the trailer is very different because there's little of the usual displays and caricatures of physical power or of much getting destroyed.

Instead, it's CM in an awesome looking, yet completely not sexualized costume, being powerful all by herself. She doesn't move or talk like a Thor or Hulk, but still walks with a confidence of someone who is accustomed to power. Subtle but interesting difference.

Yeah, there's this wonderful recurring theme of getting hit and going down, then getting back up -- the space pod slamming into the Blockbuster, and then her standing, the entire segue of hitting the ground at different ages, and then her rising up and punching some Skrulls. It's resilience as a superpower, and I'm super goddamn into it.

That move where she jumps and grabs a train and instead of clambering to the top does a gymnastic flip/roll up onto the roof and into a crouch to ruin somebody's day with a blast of energy is pretty fantastic and not really a copy of any of the other Marvel hero moves.

(One of my favorite things about Winter Soldier and Civil War was how distinct all the fighting styles were of the various characters.)

I really like the music in that trailer, so I did a bit of digging and found the full piece here, by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic, a composer I hadn't heard of before.

I knew that trailers often either borrow music from another movie, or have music specifically written for them, as composing and recording the full score tends to be one of the last things done for a film. It didn't occur to me that there would be composers such as Dimitrijevic who specialize primarily in trailer music, but now I know that's a thing.

(Also gotta just say that Larson and Jackson were both pretty excellent in the Kong: Skull Island movie which was way more fun and inventive and tongue-in-cheek than it had any right to be. Literally the only disappointment was that Tom Hiddleston's character never said, "We have a Kong."

Larson has a few moments against the big bad evil monster that made me pump my fist and say OH YEAH CAPTAIN MARVEL IS IN GOOD HANDS.)

The old lady is the punk guy from Star Trek 4. The neck pinch was a leedle beet mind meld, which affected him and brought him into contact with his own nature. He spent a lot of really high-mileage years rebelling against his own unacknowledged feelings and getting grizzled by various means before he figured some shit out and transitioned, finally getting a little peace. Her reward for all that is that a cosmically powerful being punches her in the face because she's still humming the "I hate you and I berate you" song under her breath.

My teenage daughters decided (as one of their elective baffle-the-parents traits) that this was their favorite music genre. It's called "epic music" and it's basically compositions that sound like they are from the soundtrack to a movie or video game. Thomas Bergersen is their favorite composer. He has like more than 20 albums of the stuff.

I'll bet Dimitrijevic is already on their SD cards.

I love the twisted history of Shazam! and Captain Marvel. I actually still confuse them sometimes, I saw this trailer blowing up on reddit this morning and skipped it because I thought I'd already seen it, plus it's a Marvel movie, so seen one seen em all (also because I don't watch ads if I can elect not to). I do hope it gets referenced in the movie, seems like the movies are meta-aware enough to sneak in a cheeky line or two about it.

I love the twisted history of Shazam! and Captain Marvel.

A short history: Captain Marvel was introduced by Fawcett Comics in 1940. He was Billy Batson, a boy who became a grown-up superhero by saying the word SHAZAM! He quickly became the most popular superhero in America. But Captain Marvel was also an obvious rip-off of Superman, so DC comics sued the hell out of Fawcett, the case lingered in courts for years and years, and eventually Fawcett through in the towel and gave up publishing it. (But only after they had milked it for as much money as they could, and circulation had dropped).

By the late 1960s Marvel comics realized that Fawcett's trademark on the Captain Marvel name had lapsed, and since Captain Marvel would be a good trademark for them to have, came out with their own Captain Marvel character. (That would be Mar-Vell, Jude Law in the trailer).

In the early 1970s DC, caught flat-footed, licensed the character back from Fawcett, and came out with their own Captain Marvel comic. But since Marvel now owned the trademark, they couldn't put "Captain Marvel" on the cover of their comics, so the comics were called SHAZAM! even though he was still called Captain Marvel on the inside. That led to a live-action Shazam! TV show.

In the late 70s, after the success of the TV show The Bionic Woman, Marvel started coming out with female versions of their most popular characters, which led to Ms. Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. (They also came out with Spider-Woman and She-Hulk about the same time).

Marvel's Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, was eventually killed off in the comics, but then came out with several other characters named Captain Marvel to preserve their trademark, with the title eventually passing to Carol Danvers, who now calls herself Captain Marvel instead of Ms. Marvel.

At some point, DC outright acquired the full rights to the Billy Batson character, but gave up the name Captain Marvel entirely, and so Billy Batson is just known as Shazam! nowadays.

And that's fully HALF the twisted history Shazam! and Captain Marvel.

I am totally stoked to see Carol Danvers kick butt and be awesome as Captain Marvel.

I am 100% certain that old lady is a Skrull.

I'm interested to see if they've decided Carol is a Kree, or if she's just empowered by Kree phlebotinum, or what. Also, note that with Guardians of the Galaxy the Kree have been introduced in the MCU, but the Skrull haven't yet.

Also, I would squee with sheer unadulterated joy if there was a Kamala Khan movie in the works.

Also, my partner collects female action figures (no boys, just girls) and I just realized I'm going to have to budget the money to buy her at least three of Carol...

Have I mentioned that I'm really really excited to see Carol Danvers starring in her own movie? Because damn am I excited to see an MCU movie focusing on a woman.

Interesting--Hounsou isn't playing the same character in the DCEU movies. (Although Alfre Woodard did the same thing in the MCU--she's Black Mariah in Luke Cage and was the angry mom who buttonholed Tony Stark at the beginning of Civil War.)

Some movie actors have crossed over with Agents of Shield (most notably Jamie Alexander as Lady Sif and of course Samuel L. Jackson), but the Netflix shows have been more self-contained, referencing events in the MCU but not explicitly crossing over anywhere. Whether that's because of a licensing thing or just a desire on the part of Netflix to have their shows work as a standalone thing, I'm not sure.

Poked into the topic a bit more, and it seems like there's an org chart thing making the crossover logistically difficult. Basically, the Netflix series are controlled by Ike Perlmutter at Marvel while the MCU is controlled by Kevin Feige, reporting directly to Disney. Agents of Shield is on ABC, which presumably puts it closer to the Feige side of things. (And I think it was always conceived as sort of ancillary to the MCU anyway, whereas the Netflix shows have mostly given the individual showrunners freedom to do their own stuff as long as they left things open for the Defenders crossover.)

Makes sense; the Kree have been at best Lawful Evil in the MCU, and at worst blue Klingons.

Also: Miracleman/Marvelman, the comic whose rights were so confused they had to write an entire book about who might own the character and it took decades to resolve. Snyder used fewer heads on pikes. Marvelman is required reading for any comics fan, but holy shit is it completely unfilmable.

I'm 100% here for this trailer. Like, seriously excited. But I cannot let go of the fact that Larson is WAY too young to play an Air Force colonel. Don't you need like 16 or so years of service to be considered for Lt Col?

(However, at 29, Larson is absolutely the right age to play a captain...)

Ahhh, but you see, Jude Law and Marvel have carefully avoided ever explicitly naming his character as Mar-Vell! So my hunch is that Law is either playing a character with an Obviously Evil name and/or playing an evil Skrull shapeshifted into Mar-Vell.

I hope against hope that with Clark Gregg's involvement, Captain Marvel will throw a friggin' bone to Agents of SHIELD with a tiny tie-in nod. Come on, MCU. Agents just spent an entire season on space adventures, Kree experiments on humans/Inhumans, time travel, and Kree invasions of Earth. Give us something, Captain Marvel!

I'm a relatively casual MCU fan - I've seen maybe a third of the MCU movies - and I've been reasonably satisfied that the movies can mostly stand alone without having seen all the others. Not that there aren't parts that don't mean more if you've seen other movies, but it's not critical.

I don't know what a Kree or Skrull is, I plan on seeing Captain Marvel and trust that the movie will tell me as much as I need to know without getting bogged down in unnecessary exposition.

Unless they've changed in recent years, the Skrulls are reptilian shape-changers ruled by a Queen and the Kree are militaristic, often blue skinned, created the Inhumans and are ruled by a giant brain creature. I don't think it needs to be any more complicated then that.

Krees and Skrulls for the casual: The Kree are blue humanoid aliens that have a big Star Empire way out in space; we've seen a little of them in other MCU movies and on Agents of SHIELD.
Their longstanding military enemies are the Skrulls, who are green and have pointy ears (glimpsed in the trailer) and can shapeshift / copy people to infiltrate.
Knowing about Skrull shapeshifting explains Carol punching the old lady on the train - that's a Skrull in disguise. It will also explain inevitable in-jokes coming to twitter, etc - the new "who are you and what have you done with ___" will be "you're a Skrull impostor, aren't you".

So the movie plot will be something like...Carol Danvers, Air Force Pilot, gets caught up in the Kree/Skrull War when it comes to Earth in the 90's, gets powers and goes off to fight on the Kree side in space (also amnesia?), then returns to Earth later to chase down some Skrulls. (and will inevitably leave again for space, only to be called back for help years later as seen in the end of the most recent Avengers movie).

Also re: Her Superpower is Resilience and I'm Into It. Me as well. Her power has traditionally been that she absorbs stores and releases incoming energy, like a capacitor. Zapping her with something just charges her up; but she's also got power simply from ambient background radiation, etc. So Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel as a superhero is The Personification of 'she can give as good as she gets' or 'whatever you throw at her just makes her more powerful'. If you've seen the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the Kree are the blue-skinned ones.

In the comics there are also white (pink) skinned Kree, notably Mar-Vell (the comics-original Capt. Marvel.) Younger me was impressed that aliens were given some racial diversity.

It looks like we may get that here, depending on who Jude Law's character turns out to be.

The other interesting things, narratively speaking, is that in the comics Danvers has become really, really powerful, and Feige & co have been clear that the MCU version will be the most powerful hero on the board, so to speak.

That's a big deal. I mean, we have Thor already, who is nearly invulnerable and immensely strong. He's off the scale, so to speak. In terms of sheer strength, I think canon is that only Hulk is stronger. And that's before we get to the whole storm-power thing so memorably shown on the Rainbow Bridge fight in Ragnarok. But Carol? Bigger and badder.

That's cool, but it also could give Marvel some of the same narrative problems DC has traditionally wrestled with around Superman. He's SO strong and SO powerful and effectively invulnerable that, well, it starts to get hard to tell stories with him. Donner & co. figured out in the 70s that there are really only two stories about Superman you can tell to a broad, noncomics audience:

• How Clark Kent, after being raised by the Kents with a respect for his power & kind of on the down-low, decides to become the public Superman; and
• What happens when Superman is faced with an antagonist or antagonists who are his equal in power?

GenX kids will recognize these as the plots of Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980). After that, you get bullshit like Superman: Quest for Peace.

I *totally* get the appeal of calling Carol home as a means to undo the Thanos snap, but once we have her back in the MCU, I wonder if she stays around -- on the one hand, I want her, because she's awesome, but on the other she creates the Superman problem.

There's this, and there's the problem that the Snapture and the (presumed) subsequent undoing have raised the stakes to a mindboggling level. What do you do after this? I enjoyed the heck out of Spiderman: Homecoming because the stakes were small; young man trying to do good stopping local villain (who, if unchecked, would be a large problem); the stakes were not massive and more revolved around Peter proving himself to both himself and Tony; his decision in the end to stay the neighborhood superhero is now blown out of the water because he's gone to Titan, fought Thanos, died, and came back...and he's going to go back to Queens and just hang out now?

I don't know where the MCU goes after Avengers 4, because the scaling of the threats and the power levels now seems off the charts.

Temporary fix suggestions for Captain Marvel RE: the Superman Problem:

1. Crushing Thanos and undoing the Snappening drains all of Carol's power and it takes another movie or so to rebuild her reserves.
2. Carol goes back to space to fight galactic heavy hitters but takes an upgraded Wakandan pager so she can be called back to Earth for shore leave / crossovers / birthday parties.
3. Carol hangs up the suit and goes on vacation for a couple of movies because she's been on duty and amnesiac since the '90s, man; she deserves a break drinking tequila in Tahiti (it's a magical place).
4. Carol turns out to be vulnerable to magic like Superman, so she gets a Captain Marvel / Doctor Strange crossover movie with Strange's magical enemies trolling the crap out of her.
4. Carol hangs around on Earth but as an active US military service member is legally restricted in how freely she can jump in to fix conflicts by blasting everything into particles.

Now I want a Captain Marvel / Black Widow buddy-cop crossover with Natasha all "right, here's our plan for sneaking into the terrorist compound to use the stolen codes from my stealth contact to disable the atomic bomb" and Carol's like "or I could disable the atomic bomb by punching it into SPACE!"

But the abstract is this: A good Superman story is about problems you can't solve just by punching them and threats that are not "The protagonist might get killed!" If you really can't think of any other compelling problems or threats those two (really?!), write another character.

As one fairly un-imaginative example, imagine a re-write of Man of Steel where the evil Kryptonians, newly exposed to yellow sunlight, are significantly weaker and slower than Superman, but it's clear that Superman will consider himself defeated if one single person dies in their conflict (including any of the Kryptonians).

That's pithy, but Thanos' position and abilities at the end of the last movie prove the point.

His power, and the effects of it, MUST be dismantled for the MCU to move forwrad. It's so obvious as to rob the whole affair of any real narrative tension at all.

Plus, even in the mechanics of the story, his position is fragile and based on a fetching accessory (that can be taken and removed from play), not something intrinsic to being Thanos.

Superman's power is a fixed quantity, as is Danvers' in modern treatments.

Whoa, hold up! They choose Chloe Zhao to direct a movie about the Eternals? That's actually pretty bold and exciting, depending on how much control they give her. Zhao's last two features were anything but "cosmic", being more invested in a kind of earthy realism account of lives on the outskirts. Songs My Brothers Taught Me is really good. It's about a brother and sister living on the Pine Ridge reservation, and The Rider is a low key examination of former rodeo rider trying to find a place for himself after debilitating injury. (Links to the trailers)

Neither film is what you'd think of as having a comic book aesthetic or even being particularly commercial, with the focus being more on observing subtle interactions between characters in unusual circumstance for most audiences. The films succeed well at this with even the minor characters having the feel of a full history to them and the sense of place well captured. How that will translate into a movie about the Eternals I can't imagine, but I'll be interested to see it for at least having the hint of something unexpected and new coming from it.

Her powers in the MCU are less dramatic. She has psionic abilities, but no probability altering ones, at least none that have been demonstrated.

(In my head canon, the one with those abilities - a result of her contact with the Aether - is Jane Foster, who was also revealed to be a Human/Dark Elf hybrid (which would explain why the reality stone didn't kill her, and give her cool ears). Which might be a wee bit silly, but it's still better than an off-screen break-up, at least.)

The point was more that not all "indie" stuff is the same and Zhao is interesting choice for what her style and interests have been. But I guess when people only care about movies when there budgets exceed 100 million, that doesn't matter much in the end.

To follow up on 1970's Antihero's summary:
moviebob’s 10-minute summary of the copyright issues around various Captains Marvel (or Mens Miracle) and how it wound up, legally, with Angela from Image's Spawn continuity now retconned as Thor's hidden sister.

Then, visiting the issues of X-Men that made me a Col. Danvers fan when I read them in 1989 (long after they were originally published), I'll ask Jay and Miles to do the heavy work:

Finally, some random thoughts based on re-reading the DeConnick run, and what we saw in the trailer, and what we haven't seen in the trailer.
a) Col. Danvers' memories of Earth being gone echoes a couple of times Col. Danvers's was mind-wiped in the comics: by Rogue in the late 70's, and by a brain growth in DeConnick's run.
b) But also, that shot in the trailer of Col. Danvers locked in the machine, with blue beams sizzling into her temples, seems thematically similar to the weird Project T.A.H.I.T.I machine operating on Agent Coulson's brain (in a flashback showing the resurrection of the Loki-killed agent) in season 1 of Agents of SHIELD. That resurrection was achieved with chemicals derived from the corpse of a blue alien (never explicitly named as Kree at the time.)
c) Everyone is focusing on Jude Law dancing around his character's identity, but there is not a single mention of who Annette Bening plays. IMDB lists no name (while crediting Law as Mar-Vell). It sure would be kick-ass Bening isn't playing Carol Danvers mom, but lets us see a flashback to young Carol Danvers meeting Helen Cobb at the start of Danvers' Air Force career.
d) It'll be a long six months, and we probably have two more trailers between now and 8 Mar 2019. It'd be excellent if they could do one trailer with either of these Danvers quotes from the comics:

“Have you ever seen a little girl run so fast she falls down? There's an instant, a fraction of a second before the world catches hold of her again... A moment when she's outrun every doubt and fear she's ever had about herself and she flies. In that one moment, every little girl flies."

“Well... First there was nothing, then there was everything... Then the good lord saw fit to bring me into the world to kick the asses of those who need it most. So get ready 'cause this day or the next, it's coming.”

(If I had talent and patience, I'd re-edit scenes from the trailer to those quotes.)

I'll be wearing my Carol Corps shirt to the theater on 8 Mar...

If you expand the video description on that YouTube page, you get a synopsis that's very different from the trailer:

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

I have no idea whether this is substantiated, but what I was told via the Jay & Miles X-Plain The X-Men Discord is that all the CGI for the movie is still in progress, but after an internal demo reel leaked they felt they had to release something, and cut together a trailer with scenes that look "done" without VFX.
